Randall Brown, 39, and Daniel Popet, 25, both of Woodridge, were arrested by sheriff's deputies yesterday after stealing a $3,000 trash compactor from Sunshine Estates bungalow colony on Ranch Road in Thompson.

The pair then sold it to a scrap metal dealer in Woodridge for $69.

Brown and Popet were charged with grand larceny, a felony, and released with an appearance ticket.

Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff says metal thefts continue to be a problem in the county.

Metal thefts have been numerous in our region this year as alleged thieves try to capitalize on the strong market for scrap metal, police said.

Don't you think it's time the all colonies installed hidden cameras around their premises. I know of many who have and have saved themselves from major agravation and expense by being away and being able to "see" what's going on from afar. The contractor you hired says he's there working and it's a rough winter travel, you review the cameras and see he's no where in sight. You tell him, that you don't see him, call me when you get there. Ha, ha, ha.
