BT.com (http://bit.ly/1fCkdaB) reports that German-Jewish Winton, who saved the lives of 669 predominantly Jewish children by arranging for their transport by train from Czechoslovakia to London in 1939, died last month at the age of 106.

Justin Cohen, a news editor for Jewish News who co-authored the petition, said, “Sir Nicholas shied away from the ‘hero’ label but we could think of no one more deserving of this rare honor.”

In making the announcement, a Royal Mail spokeswoman said, “One of the purposes of Royal Mail stamps is to honor those who have made important contributions to the UK, and every year we consider hundreds of subjects for inclusion. It is clear that Sir Nicholas Winton is a worthy candidate.”
