The incident occurred during a live broadcast in Bedford County, when shots could be heard, sending the reporter and her source screaming and ducking for cover.
In the video from the Wednesday incident, a female reporter is interviewing Vicki Gardner, head of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce about tourism on Bridgewater Plaza in Franklin County. She was smiling when suddenly at least eight shots were heard. The camera appeared to get dropped on the ground. The reporter can be heard screaming.
The station then switches back to a shot of an anchor back at the station, who has a shocked expression on her face.
In tweets and on its website, WDBJ-TV identified the two killed as Alison Parker and Adam Ward.
In an email, Barb Nocera, special projects manager with the Chamber of Commerce, said that Gardner was shot in the back and is in surgery.
The station is based in Roanoke, Virginia, and serves the southwest and central part of the state. The shopping mall where the incident happened is just off Smith Mountain Lake.
Moneta is about 25 miles southeast of Roanoke.
Franklin County deputies are searching for a suspect and a motive.
Wow. That’s crazy.
I’ll bet that it must have been one our dear presidents co-religionists who acted in altruism for Allah. The god of the Whitehouse.
Jealous husband?
In NYC, whenever I see a camera crew, there is always one ‘tough guy’ along with them. I’ve never seen one in a uniform or with anything explicitly labeling the guy as security, but its pretty clear that he’s with the crew and that he’s there to make sure trouble doesn’t happen. The guys I’ve seen are always dressed and groomed like they’re from a motorcycle gang.
