Monsey, NY - One of the governing principle of Vos iz Nieas is that an honest, free and open discussion of the challenges and issues that we face is the best way to address them.

Rabbi Yakov Horowitz, Menahel, Yeshiva Darchei Noam  of Monsey Director, Project YES, whose columns we often carry on Vos iz Nieas, exemplifies that approach. His courageous and informative columns are a breath of fresh air and do much to improve things for the children and parents in our community.

This Thursday, October 16th, from 10:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST; Rabbi Horowitz is starting a pilot radio call-in program to allow members of our kehila to discuss parenting questions with him and to seek his advice. We are pleased that Rabbi Horowitz is taking this step and look forward to posting excerpts from his talks on our site from time to time.

Rabbi Horowitz’s Radio Program will be airing Thursday, October 16th, from 10:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST on WSNR 620 AM in the NYC area, on WKAT 1360 AM in Miami and can be accessed anywhere in the world by streaming on the internet at www.talklinecommunications.com .

In addition to taking calls, Rabbi Horowitz will be reading and addressing written questions submitted via email. As a public service, we will offer you the opportunity to pose questions for Rabbi Horowitz to address on his program by posting them on this thread and we will forward them to Rabbi Horowitz before the start of the program. (Please pose your comments in question form -- addressed to Rabbi Horowitz)

Rabbi Horowitz is also running a major fundraising event  – a benefit concert featuring Avrohom Fried and Chazzan Helfgot – to fund the lifesaving klal work he is doing at Project YES, which he founded 11 years ago to address the teens-at-risk issue. The concert will take place the Sunday evening after Succos, October 26th in The Jazz at Lincoln Center. Visit his website at www.rabbihorowitz.com  or call (718)758-3131 to order your tickets or to become a concert sponsor.

Can you educate parents teachers and rabbis about the genuine threat we face as a community, from physical, mental, emotional, controlling, and sexual abuse, and how it is effecting the lives of our young and older children?

For starters, please recommend whether or not children should be barred from listening to the radio program. Then again, there's no way in the world that taboo topics will be discussed on the air. So, what's the point then? I guess I'll have to tune in to find out. Count me in!

Dear Rabbi Horowitz,
By airing our "dirty laundry" on the air, I dont beleive that you will be doing a "service" to the yiddish community. Once you agree to go on the radio and take calls you will be faced with challanges that you just wont be able to pick and choose to address. So do you even realize what you are getting yourself into? Our community has severe problems that have not been addressed for years and the community is fed up! You will be questioned about abuse, physical, and emotional, , alcoholism, addictions, children at risk, shidduchim challanges, etc. These are not issues that can be fixed on the air and with one phone call. The system is broken and needs to be fixed, however taking calls on a radio show wont help the problem.
I should know! I am a member of the The Family Crisis Intervention Unit!

In Monsey a few years ago back in the 90's they tried to have a Jewish radio station and the rabbonim ossured it and put some very fine people in cherem who had the shows on the radio. I really enjoyed listening to Yaakov Spivak, Mike Koplen, Zev Brenner, Rabbi Twersky and many others but these were all threatened with cherem for having a radio show and finally it was shut down. This exact thing will happen again if Rabbi Horowitz dares to say anything that will make someone uncomfortable. So be prepared Rabbi Horowtiz.

reb yankel with the best of intentions, there is no need to submit questions ,you have saved all the hundreds of questions on index cards from your succesful workshops ( its the same 30 questions over & over) WHAT IS NEEDED IS REAL ANSWERS, not a krechtz -" this is a difficult one", no one is expecting you to have the answers
but the proper forum would be :
1.to take 5 questions from your cards
2.do the research
3.,speak to the right people
4.& on the air explain what advice you were given
A. name 3 therapists that "effectivly" treat molestors ( not call a refferal agency)?
B. my daughter wants to go to sem i need $10,000 ?
C. my son wants music lessons , do you know an ehrliche "drum teacher"?
D. I suffer from occasional siezures , when i date as soon as they hear of my condition they say no thank you?
E. my daughter in law embarreses us when she comes for yom tov dressed in appropiatly ( yes we love her & accept her) she says this is me , if you dont like my skirts i wont come......
& on & on these are real questions by real people that are dealt with by real ehrliche rabonim daily reb yankel ask them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wishing you hatzlacha

YOU AS A PARENT SHOULD BE HONEST AND OPEN WITH YOUR CHILDREN. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID TO DISCUSS "ANYTHING" WITH THEIR PARENTS. UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN IT COMES TO CERTAIN SUBJECTS PARENTS TEND TO SHY AWAY IR SAY IT'S INAPPROPRIATE. NOTHING , NOTHING IS INAPPROPRIATE FOR A PARENT TO DISCUSS WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND I WILL CHALLENGE THAT WITH ANY PARENT. WHEN YOU TELLYOUR CHILD "WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THAT , OR THAT IS DISCUSTING, OR THAT IS FOR GOYIK..." THEN YOU CREATE A PROBLEM.... CREATE A MONSTER..

I don't think Rabbi Horowitz can possibly fix anything and I think he is smart enough to know that. But we NEED to DO SOMETHING and STOP sweeping this garbage (I am talking of child abuse) under the rug and pretending that it doesn't happen by US. It seems that it does, and much more than we have imagined (at least I speak for myself). We need to make our people aware and alert to this problem. At the least if victims come forward we gain 2 things. 1. There is a better chance of identifying the predators and hopefully if a case can be built we can prosecute ALL the villans and enablers that have been aiding and abetting these scum. We should be MEFARSEIM the names of the predators so they never get close to children.
2. We can encourage the victims and their families to seek help and therapy from frum qualified professionals so they can salvage their damaged lives.
If we are lucky, maybe some vigilantes will take care of business.
Let these predators be on notice that there WILL be SERIOUS consequences for their actions and they can no longer expect to be given the customary automatic free pass.
I can't wait to hear that justice has been served when these low lives are sent to rot in prison and they will be administered appropriate nekama once their fellow inmates find out what they're in for. We will see a sudden precipitous drop in these kinds of abuse. Thank you Rabbi Horowitz for being a MAN B'mokom sh'ain Ish.
You have guts and I wish you much Hatzlacha and hope you won't give up once the threats etc. start flying your way.

Rabbi Horowitz, your program will have to be an all-day show in order to cover the many issues that plague the frum communities everywhere. It's not "dirty laundry" that you'll be airing, but it will be a support to all of us who care and want to take responsible steps forward. Best of luck. We'll be listening and learning.

Rabbi Horowitz I wish you luck - your'e going to need it - I predict all kinds of pressure and threats will be directed against you to stop you from doing this radio program. I doubt you will be able to perservere. There are many powerful people out there with different ideas and shitos that can do you harm in one way or another - at some point you will throw in the towel - but at least a dent will have been made and an awareness spread for an important toeles.
I just wish it didn't have to come to this and the Gedolim would have tackled this
issue. I would strongly suggest that you go to at least 2 gedolim (before some "choshovah askonim" get to them all - you know what I mean) and get an endorsement for what you are doing.

My dear brothers, I don't know if any of you have noticed ...but there are no gedoililm left. R. Horowitz & D. Hikind are 2 of the few guys who have decided to take the bull by the horns. If YOU are not part of the solution you are ......

Why do you go after Rabbi Horowitz? We fiannly have a man that wants to do something and SOLVE issues in our community and we have to hear the negativity again on these blogs.

Some of you people are disgusting. if you think you have a btter way then do it and stop talking about others who put their life on the line for all of us.

I am totally sick and tired of the garbage that I hear from you.

No wonder why nothing gets done in our communities. When you hear enough jerks like you telling people like Rabbi Horowitz "he does not know what he is getting into" it is discouraging and makes people give up before they even start.

Do you have better ways? List your ideas and if you can't then I say with the highest regard for you - and that is SHUT UP.

WLIR 1300 was closed because of licensing nothing to do with the monsey rabbonim. Theres enough out there about rabbonim that they dont need lies.

You can only name names if the survivor and all the survivors friends and relatives are willing to deal with the community backlash and the social manipulations by the abuser, usually this is not the case, but that will change over time.

Maybe it finally closed for other reasons but it is a fact the Monsey rabbonim ossured it and made a big campaign against it and urged the yidden to boycott the businesses of the people who had shows on it. That is 100% EMMES!

Why can't we allow the radio show be just that, not another forum to discuss the various views about abuse? Rabbi Horowitz has much to offer in guiding us to raise our children in ways that will improve their chances of growing up normal in this crazy world.

Perhaps I'm wrong to think this way, but I always wonder about the motives of people who find one reason or another to block any attempt to curtail abuses in our communities.

Rabbi Horowits. since the rabbonim are not capable of handling the molestation issue and since law enforcement takes forever to stop a molester, what do you think about doing street and vigilanty justice on these pigs?

Oct 13, 2008 at 01:41 PM Yankel Says:

ok who wants to be the Judge, Jury and executioner ? I'm wondering why is it that only people who speak about Rabonim with disgust are afraid of their children being molested. I see here that they are even trying to tell Rabbi Horowitz how to proceed (more action less talk) (There are no Gedolim left - only Rabbi Horowitz and Dov Hiking) hmm...

please, i think these poor children have suffered enough. let them finally feel they can unload and be heard without shame. they need to know its not their fault, its the adult at fault. i think the children in school should have an anonymous box to write and 5 adults together can read the notes, and when a name comes up more than once, there should be an investigation into that person (staff). just an idea...hope its a good one
