New York, NY - Trying to fight a shocking spike in murders and shootings, the NYPD has launched a blue blitz against violent crime by boosting overtime for patrol cops and narcotics detectives.

Two weeks ago, the department added 300 overtime shifts a week for patrol cops at the 17 precincts where the rise in violence is highest. This is in addition to 500 overtime shifts added in the summer.

The shifts, expected to last until the end of the year, are available from Thursday through Sunday and in some cases, the NYPD can't find volunteers to fill them.

This weekend, the department also began adding overtime shifts for narcotics detectives, sending teams out for buy-and-busts.

Because the procedure is new, some of the teams were filled with officers from the major-case and vice squads.

Some narcotics cops saw this as a problem because they hadn't worked together before and didn't know the neighborhoods.

The NYPD has also hiked overtime shifts for warrant officers and is sending caravans of 10 police cars to housing projects in a show of force.

While overall crime is down 3.2 percent compared with last year, as of Oct. 5, murders were up 11.4 percent and shootings rose 7 percent. Robberies were up 2.5 percent.

As of Oct. 5, there were 400 murders, compared with 359 last year. If the trend continues, the city will end the year with about 550 slayings, compared to 496 last year, the lowest in nearly four decades.

Police brass say that while murders are up over last year, they are 8.5 percent below levels in 2006 and 17.5 percent lower than those in 2001.

The 17 precincts where the crime rise is the highest include one in Manhattan, five in The Bronx, seven in Brooklyn, three in Queens and one in Staten Island.

Murder and crime never doped in the city, it's how good they make a homicide into a suicide and how good they are in getting rid of 61's (police reports). it's all about there lovely "CON" STAT and they know what they have to do the pct level..... I'm glad there waking up and and smelling the coffee and yes let the average cop get some overtime.
