Israeli authorities have released into house arrest an Arab Israeli who drove his car during the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday in an incident that sparked four nights of rioting in Acre.

Israel - An Israeli Arab man was put under house arrest on Wednesday and his driver's license was suspended for a month, after he drove in a largely Jewish area on Yom Kipper.

Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Tawfik Jamal may also be charged with reckless driving and violating religious sensibilities for the incident last Wednesday that sparked several days of riots in the ancient Israeli-Arab city of Acre.

It occurred on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement when Jews fast and most also refrain from driving.

Jamal, who said he had driven to a relative's house on one of the rare streets in Israel where Jews and Arabs live in the same apartment buildings, has apologised for the incident.

Police arrested him on Tuesday and he was brought before a judge in Haifa District Court on Wednesday, where a judge ordered him released to house arrest for seven days and suspended his license for 30 days, Rosenfeld said.

The riots in Acre, normally a rare example of peaceful Jewish-Arab coexistence, exposed the underlying tensions between Israel's Jewish majority and its Arab citizens who make up about a fifth of the population, and complain of discrimination.

Arab lawmakers have accused Israel of arresting Jamal for political reasons, noting that Israelis are seldom brought up on legal charges for driving on Yom Kippur or any other religious holidays when Orthodox rabbis proscribe driving.

Arab-Israeli MK Ahmed Tibi (UAL) sharply criticized the arrest, Tibi asked Will police start arresting Jews who eat on Ramadan?

MK (member of Knesset. That itself bears commenting on) ahmed tibbi asked [rhetorically]. "Will [Israeli] Police start arresting Israelis who eat on rrramadan"?! Well, mr. tibbi. The answer is no! Your compatriot wasn't arrested for driving. He was arrested for playing his music in an offensive manner (in addition to driving recklessly into a crowd of Jews!)

Gee, I wonder what he will do with all those extra hours cooped up at home, I guess he will have to watch Arab TV, and get incited to do more disruptive things next time.
