Victoria, Australia – In a move that is described as one that “best meets” the school’s security needs, reps for Victoria’s largest Jewish school, Mount Scopus Memorial College, announced that armed security guards will now be employed on all three of its Melbourne campuses.

THEAGE.com.au (http://bit.ly/1NbYUdt) reports that in making the announcement, Principal Rabbi James Kennard said that no particular incident sparked the decision, but that the move was made based on “the heightened security levels now in place across Australia and worldwide.”
“Our foremost priority remains the safety of our students and staff,” Kennard said of the co-ed school which accommodates some 1530 students from kindergarten through grade 12.
While Jewish schools and institutions in Sydney have employed armed guards for over 20 years, Mount Scopus will be the first in Melbourne to do so.
