Police say 50-year-old Marco Ortiz, of Brooklyn, turned himself in Monday morning after police released Surveillance video of the incident. He’s facing one count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Ortiz was behind the wheel of a white minivan that struck Marlene Zotti around 12:30 a.m. Sunday near the corner of Ninth Avenue and 42nd Street in Borough Park.
Zotti, who was hit a half-block from her home, was rushed to Lutheran Hospital, where she died, police said.
I wonder if he’s an American citizen.
I was not there and have no information about this incident.
Ultimately, some of these incidents are because people cross in the middle of the block or without the light. Older individuals and those with canes or walker also do this because it is harder to walk to a corner.
It is the driver’s responsibility to be careful but my belief is that pedestrians and bikers need to follow the rules.
I have noticed that many streets do not have enough lighting. even with lamp posts the lighting is diminished when the trees are in full bloom. contact your local elected officials and tell them if you see a block that has more trees blocking lighting. if you see a block that needs a traffic light , petition your local elected for that too!! speak up , get others to do the same.
After driving in Brooklyn and in other neighborhoods, and upstate too, I am sadly never surprised at pedestrians being struck by cars. Doesn’t make it less tragic but I’ve seen people cross carelessly, between cars without regard to traffic, or to check if they have right to cross!
Good it wasn’t a frum Yid who was the driver. The hit and run frum victim on Coney Island Avenue near Pomegranate was never captured.
