The military says five were detained Saturday and taken for questioning while the others retreated.

Two demonstrators were shot dead earlier in the day during a violent protest near the border. Seven Palestinians were killed the previous day, as protests and clashes that have gripped Israel and the West Bank spread to the Gaza border area.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner says that given the history of Palestinian attacks along the Gaza border, Israel “must consider any breach of the buffer zone with Gaza to be a potential threat both to civilians and security forces.”
