New York, NY - A rapidly increasing number of people are complaining about getting harassed and abused by bill collectors.

Nearly 71,000 people filed such complaints with the Federal Trade Commission last year, roughly double the number in 2003. In addition, more than 14,000 complained to the Better Business Bureau.

It's become a big problem in New York City, where officials say that shady collectors are threatening deportation against immigrants over bad debts. New York City commissioner of consumer affairs Jonathan Mintz says his office investigated 1,277 complaints last year, up from 508 in 2004.

Experts say the problem is only going to get worse as the recession takes hold.

Unfortunately I'm one of those who had to get mean and tough with people with past due bills, and some of them are friends. I understand them but do I hae a choice?

Please note: bills do not generally go away. there may be ways to get the collectors off your back or you can even tell them not to phone but you still owe the money and they can get a court order or lien.

They can not cash in on the lien, you can always try to nogotiate for a lower balance even more then half off. some companies offer this service, it called Debt Settlement.

Some of us are beyond debt settlement. Some of us are going to lose our homes. I'm one. I don't sleep, I'm on heart meds which I can't afford, so i skip doses. If i die from the stress I'm not insured & my family can't afford Kevurah. Don't make jokes you should never know how bad it is and the level of fear & panic.

Oct 31, 2008 at 08:13 AM NEED MY MONEY Says:

I am a small business owner servicing to other businesses. I have learned the hard way never to trust people who look nice in the community. They are taking me for a ride not paying on the agreed terms.

I must say there are some very good people who pay fast and I give them special credit. But some people I know are filthy rich, or at least they play rich are the ones not paying me.

When my Yeshiva hounded me for tuition I told them I can’t afford it. My money is used for 2 winter vacations in Florida, fabulous summer homes and the like. When they asked if I don’t think my children’s tuition comes first, I told them. Oh no… I don’t spend this money. It is my customers who owe me money and instead of paying me they go on vacations.

Lesson learned: Don’t be shy to put a good account on hold if they don’t pay. They may give you lots of business but if they don’t pay, you don’t need it. I’m not talking here about extending a little. This is a cash flow issue every business should learn.

To all of you who pay their small Heimish supplies on time: Thank you very much. This is the best Tzedukah! Helping a Yid make parnassa.

To all of you who already put out of business multiple small companies in our communities: SHAME ON YOU!
