New York City – Rabbi On Standby With Kosher Refreshment for The Marathon

“The average runner can grab a cup of Gatorade anywhere along the race course, but we have to plan ahead, to have people meet us at certain points with kosher-certified drinks,” said Dovid Yehoshua Schachner, a former schoolteacher in Queens and an orthodox Jew who has run three marathons and is running on Sunday.

According to Gatorade’s Web site, the drink lacks kosher certification. This was a cause of concern for Zev Wineberg, a Hasidic rabbi who lives and runs a Jewish center on Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City, Queens.

Rabbi Wineberg is an occasional runner who dreams of one day running the marathon. For now, however, his involvement extends to cheering the marathoners as they run past his building on Vernon Boulevard, near 48th Street — and offering kosher sports drinks to runners.

“There is no kosher certification for Gatorade, and I felt that kosher runners should have something to drink besides water,” he said.

So the rabbi bought cases of Powerade, a sports drink that is kosher-certified, and said he will offer it to “anyone who wants it, but specifically to runners who are strictly observant.”

“We want to support their physical and spiritual well-being,” he said. Rabbi Wineberg estimated that there were perhaps “several hundred” runners in the marathon who observe kosher regulations. Many gather in groups at the starting line for morning prayer.

How about a kosher marathoner instead of marathoning through the streets of new York , do something constructive and marathon through gemorah rashi tosfos

Reply to #3, as far as i remember , Shlomo Hamelech did not say there is a time to run the New York marathon. If you want to counter my comment with venishmartem es nafshoseichem, run on a tread mill. But to run through the streets of new york with shiktzes and G-D know what else, that is not oisgehalten and a chilul hashem. Period

    Dear Mr. 15

what ever chabad does you are going to have a problem with! and dont start asking on this good rabbi why he does this and not that. first thing start by asking yourself why are you writing these comments instead of learning? and why are you so anti pepole that are doing good. and the list can go on and on.

just think in all the good before the bad in a person and there is no such thing as a BIGGER mivtzah or a BIGGER avera.

    Amazing Kiddush Hashem!!
It was kind of sad to watch how these runners go past Williamsburg and the community is ignoring them as if no one is passing through, at least put up a sign to welcome the runners or hand out water to drink……
