New York - Despite the tense rift between Republican and Democratic Jews over the course of the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, exit polls on Tuesday showed that Barack Obama received about 77 percent of the Jewish vote.

These numbers were higher even than the 2004 election, when Democratic candidate John Kerry received 74 percent of the Jewish vote. Al Gore received the highest percentage of Jewish votes in 2000, with 79 percent.

Jeremy Ben-Ami, executive director of the J Street lobby group on Tuesday called Obama's victory a sign that the campaign waged against him by Republican Jews comprised "baseless smears."

"American Jews resoundingly rejected the two-year, multi-million dollar campaign of baseless smears and fear waged against him by the right wing of our community," he said. "Surrogates and right-wing political operatives in our community stopped at nothing in their efforts to sway Jewish voters against Obama."

"We can only hope that these results put to rest for good the myth that fear and smear campaigns - particularly around Israel - can be an effective political weapon in the Jewish communit," he added.

A Gallup poll released in late October showed Jewish voters favored Barack Obama over John McCain by more than 3 to 1, with 74% saying they would vote for Obama over 22% for McCain.

The poll, which interviewed over 650 Jewish registered voters each month since June, showed American Jews growing increasingly comfortable with Obama since July, when the Illinois Senator tied up the Democratic Party nomination.

The poll showed support for McCain among Jews stood at a high of 34% in June, before beginning its downward turn in July after Obama's nomination.

It's not shocking. Read the Jewish tabloids like the Jewish Week , Jewish Journal , Forward ,et al... and you'll see the mad Jewish gallop to the Democtars and left wing agendas in general. Some of their columnists , especially this Fein fellow , can make you vomit.
The worst part of it is that so many of these Jews call these anti-Torah views ( abortion , gay marriage ,etc. "Jewish values." Of couse , they wouldn't know a Jewish value if they tripped over one.
I can't think of any other ethnic group that has so little self-pride.

Perhaps the 77% has intelligent and valid opinions? Or does the 23% have an infallible lock on emes? Part of mature participation in a democratic process is non-villification of one's political opponents and a respect for those who vote differently with you do. Both McCain and Obama represent mainstream American, democratic political traditions - much more so than do Bush/Cheney/Rove - and we all will do just fine under an Obama administration.

#6 is right. You have to distinguish between Jews who vote like Jews and Jews who vote like goyim. If a Yid thought that Obama would be good for yidden (for whatever reason, I can't imagine) then fine. But if he voted for Obama b/c he puts the needs of others ahead of his own family and people, then he's no different from a goy voting for Obama.

Ok so lets see an exit poll that breaks down the vote of Orthodox Jews. Remember these exit polls are voluntary and so if wouldnt surprise me if alot of the supposed Jewish vote came from both messianics and deform movement who call themselves Jews. And yes I did say deform movement because most of the reform are NOT halachic yids because of assimilation throughout the generations....

Our Rebbeim have been telling us for years not too get too comfortable here, that the USA, as good as it's been, is still Galus. Hashem will now make that message clear to all of us, only the secular Jews in FL, PA, NYC, etc still won't get the message.

Well that is a good reason to vote for someone who hates you. I decided based on Israel, the economy, and you voted to be different from something that had you listened might have actually been valuable info. Let's just hope he's not Hitler. One thing is for sure though he's not going to be good for the Jews...........are you one of those people by the way?

Yes, we survived Carter. But Carter was faced with a Zionist government in Israel. Now we have an Israeli government that seems more anti-zionist than the Americans, and no real prospect that the next government will be any better. (Netanyahu is the one who gave away Chevron, and is personally responsible for all the people who were killed because of that decision.)

But yes, Adam Smith remarked over 200 years ago that "there's a lot of ruin in a country", and we can probably survive four years of this too. Palin/Jindal in 2012!

How does the fact that Jews didn't listen prove that the campaign was false? All this proves is that Jews are gullible, and were particularly swayed by the smear campaign against Palin. Just two days before the election I got an email repeating the claim that Palin had been a Buchanan supporter! And the Democrats have the chutzpah to talk about smears?

You have a valid point. No exit polls were taken in Boro Park, Williamsburg and all the neighborhoods heavily populated by Jews. If in a non-religious neighborhood, there were 23 percent for McCain - that's a high number, and says that in a frum neighborhood the percentage for McCain was threefold and even more.

Unfortunately the "Medinat Yisroel" is not the rock of ages. They are generally not frum and bend to American pressure as well as European. Trust me, Obama will absolutely be a chorban to worldwide Jewry. Look into his answers on "youtube" during the debate with Hillary when asked whether he would defend Israel from an attack from Iran. He was squirming like he had hemorrhoids. He couldn't say that he would

What is wrong with the middah of Hakaras Hatov? We are citizens of a country that provides us with religious freedom and economic opportunity, and many of us (say 77%) have voted for a candidate who we feel will insure those opportunities for our children.

I was at the big Obama victory rally in Harlem last night, with thousands of people of every ethnic group. (I was not the only Jew!). It was a very happy and very polite crowd, with not a bad word about anyone from anybody. No alcohol or drugs in sight, and not out of control at all.

Yidden in golus have always wisely supported politicians of all stripes. Murray,

If you would care to compare McCain's and Obama's policy proposals, whether on social or fiscal issues, you might be hard-pressed to prove your point...can you identify, say, two major issues and tell me by just how much these two differ (some reliable sources would be good, too, not the crazed Limbaugh/Hannity stuff most commentators seem to be addicted to).

I agree that it was a beautiful & gracious speech. He mentioned looking forward to working with McCain, and McCain's service to this country; he thanked McCain & Palin as well. He talked about working together to make the country better for everyone. And of course he evoked Lincoln, another obscure Illinois congressman, with the quote: "We are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection". I didn't hear any Hitler in there either, unless you'd call Lincoln a fascist.

From the footage I saw, the Grant Park crowd seemed happy & awed, though not in any way disorderly.
