Manhattan, NY - A judge agreed to free an upper West Side woman accused of running a massive swindle on $10 million bail after her wealthy brother made a blockbuster offer to get her out.

Dina Wein-Reis, 44, could be released from a Manhattan federal lockup as early as today.

She's been held since last Tuesday, when she and five others were indicted on federal charges in Indiana for conning Fortune 500 companies into donating goods they believed were going to schools and Indian reservations.

Instead, prosecutors say, Wein-Reis earned big profits reselling the goods to retailers and wholesalers.

Judge Shira Scheindlin was prepared to refer the case to an Indiana judge for a bail hearing when Wein-Reis' brother, Hershel Wein, offered to put up his Lawrence, L.I., home - plus his $1.3 million annual salary as collateral.

"I have 100% faith in my sister," said Wein, a partner in a white-shoe Manhattan law firm. "The idea that she will flee. That will not happen."

"You have that much confidence?" Scheindlin asked.

"One hundred percent, your honor," Wein said.

Wein also said that if his sister should flee, he would not repay the bond with money she gave him.

His sister looked pale and tired in a blue prison outfit as she talked to her lawyers, John Meringolo and Marc Agnifilo. In the audience, her mother, Vivian, wiped away tears.

Wein-Reis' parents also offered to put up their $900,000 home, also in Lawrence.

Prosecutors say Wein-Reis used stolen cash to furnish her plush W. 75th St. home with valuable artwork, including an Andy Warhol portrait of Truman Capote.

She also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a rooftop getaway above her home.

Judge Shira is Judge Judy's daughter.

Contrary to rumor, and despite their shared irascibility, Judge Judy Sheindlin and Judge Shira Scheindlin (S.D.N.Y.) are NOT related. As you can see, their last names are spelled differently.

here is clarification from the legal forum "above the law.com"

According to Forbes, Judge Judy has a net worth of $95 million. She earns $25 million a year -- over 100 times the Chief Justice's salary.

Random aside: Contrary to rumor, and despite their shared irascibility, Judge Judy Sheindlin (at left) and Judge Shira Scheindlin (S.D.N.Y.; at right) are NOT related. As you can see, their last names are spelled differently. Despite this difference, Judge Scheindlin of the Southern District regularly receives telephone calls from people in search of televised justice.

Being mature is not a problem. If on the other hand you were referring to materialism, then I whole heartedly agree. One need not cite the Brisker Rov when there's a posuk that says the same thing. Viyishman yeshuran vayivot

I must disagree about their upbringing! Dina Wein gew up in Flatbush back in the 70's where her parents home was a place of Torah and of Hachnosas Orchim. Her father was a inspirational and energetic speaker and her mother was always by his side. It was a warm home and they were a respected and beloved part of our small community (as it was back in the 70s). Why a child chooses a particular path is not always the result of the upbringing. There are unfortunate twists and turns in one's life and they sometimes choose the wrong path.

Hershel Wein is 100% correct. I don't know him and never heard of him, but he knows how upset Hashem was that the first person born became a murderer and then had the chutzpah to say, "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Hershel Wein certainly is his sister's keeper.
Way to go, Mr. Heshy Hero Wein!

In response to AMG: Please look into the family before posting. Dina comes form an extremely choshov family and a sound upbringing. We are part of a society that always needs to point a finger at someone else, when often we just need to look in the mirror.

You are way off base. Dina Wein never lived in Long Island. She was raised in a home that was not (by any standard) materialistic. If you want to make your pre-judged point, do it elsewhere. it does not apply to these facts.

Heshy is a talmid chochom from a family of talmidei chachamim and is being mikayim the mitzvah of oomebisarcha al tisaalem -you shall not hide from your flesh and blood. I echo the other posters that Hashem should give this choshuva family the strength in this most difficult time. We should not be judgemental but should give the family our unwavering support.

This is in response to whoever this amg person is. I really hope you get to read this. That is if you do know how to read, because you certainly can't write or spell, which is so shocking considering the fact that all computers have spell check and can check your grammar for you. Your ignorance is way past your deficiency in the english language. Maybe instead of judging others lives, their decisions on where to live and where and how to raise their children, maybe you should spend some time taking an english course. How can anybody take you seriously when you spell "laurence"instead of Lawrence, "maturalism" instead of materialism, "envorement " instead of environment. To correct all of your spelling errors is a waste of my time, look them up in a dictionary. From the kind of ignorant and close minded comments that you made, I highly doubt you own one in your home. I don't even want to start correcting your poor sentence structure and grammatical usage. What I can't believe is that such a narrow minded, close minded and judgmental person exists. How dare you attack and criticize where and how parents raise their children? Do you even know the family before passing judgment? The answer is of course "NO", because if you would know who they are, you would know that they are an amazing and well respected family who raised their family in Flatbush, not Long Island. Which brings me to my next point. How dare you attack and criticize a community and place where hundreds of jews live. Are there no criminals who live in Flatbush, Boro park etc. We all know all the names of the men who are sitting in jail or who were indicted who live in Flatbush, and when they walk into shul on Shabbat everyone speaks to them and they get much respect. Are you that insecure in yourself, that you feel if you live in a certain place you may do some things that are questionable, and if you live in a different area you would not have done those things. Where is your belief and emunah in hakodosh boruch hu? Does he not nave a role in people's decisions? I'm sure the Brisker Rav whom you were trying so pathetically to quote, is not in favor of passing judgment on other fellow jews and the decions they chose. Furthermore, singling out a community is reprehensible and again leads me to believe that you are either a person filled with a lot of jealousy towards others and communities whom have more wealth than you, or you a a very ignorant small town person with with a small town mind. In either case, I feel very sorry for you.

wow, nice speech. And I agree with you. You should not accuse or blame or comment on sensitive issues without having any knowledge of what really happened, or any knowledge of the peple involved!
I have only one side question: Is there a halacha about pidyon shivuim on someone who commited a crime? What if you are pretty certain the person is guilty?
I always thought the mitzvah was in old days, goverments or kings would kidnap Jews and demand a high ransom for their release, and the din od pidyan shivuim was in that case.
Anyone know??

Dina married her husband, David "Reis", after 'converting' him to Judaism.
He is Columbian. Real name is RUIZ. She met and fell in love with him and now, bec. of her money, they have become respected solid citizens of the Upper West Side Frum community! HELLO!?

I just found out about this story from my Jewish ex who lives in NJ community where the Reis' have a home. I am reading the posts/comments and am flabbergasted regarding the lack of outrage and disgust. Clearly there is sufficient evidence that Wein-Reis and friends defrauded companies and made millions of dollars off of charitable donations designated for the needy. Whether her family is religious or whether she and her husband keep religious law is inconsequential. They are criminals and should be treated as such! Stating that they are criminals is neither “anti-Semitic” nor hateful. I am Puerto Rican, if a Puerto Rican commits a crime and I am being told about the crime and in the dialogue the criminal's ethnicity is mentioned, i.e. "he was a short Puerto Rican male..." I am not going to exclaim that racism. I would feel bad knowing that someone of my ethnicity has committed a crime, and more importantly I would feel bad that humans are sometimes inhumane. There is good and bad in everyone. To excuse Dina and David because they are Jewish, or to comment that her brother did an honorable thing by posting her bond is plain wrong! These people are evil and deserve the maximum penalties!!!
