Postville, IA - Rubashkin Files For Bankruptcy |
|
Agriprocessors' move to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday comes a day before the meatpacker was to meet in court with its biggest lender, First Bank of St. Louis.
The bank is seeking to foreclose on the plant in Postville and appoint a third party to oversee Agriprocessors' assets.
The bankruptcy filing says Agriprocessors owes $50 million to $100 million to creditors.
The plant was the site of a May 12 immigration raid in which 389 people were arrested.
A lawyer for the company did not immediately return a call today seeking comment.
Also in today's news, the Gordon slaughterhouse in Gordon, NB, run by Agriprocessors has closed because of the financial problems the kosher meat company is having.
The phone number for the Local Pride LLC plant that Agriprocessors ran was disconnected today.
And Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO of the Orthodox Union, said the Local Pride plant in Gordon closed several days ago when Agriprocessors lost its line of credit because the company couldn't afford any new cattle.

Pay attention all large business owners. Under president elect obama, you will be in a much higher tax bracket if you make over 200,000 a year. That means that there will nebach be layoffs downsizing and outsourcing of business and chas veshalom even closing of companies.
It's a shame that rubashkin had to go down so fast so messy and so shameful. had they closed because of taxes it would not have to shame us as a people.

The Torah says that eating meat from an ox allows a Yid to understand better Torah.
The Torah also says that an am hooretz should not eat meat.
The lesson is obvious, it depends what you do with the extra nutrition you get from the meat. an am hooretz has his capabilities of using it for good limited and he may use it in the wrong way, but those that will use the extra nutrition to understand the Torah better, to do mitzvos in a more lively way with Iras Shomaim and will do the things that are permissible with a leshem Shomaim intention (for the sake of Heaven) it is good.

Its not the worst thing. Sometimes you have to use the laws and protection from the government to protect yourself. That is what is great about this country.
This is a perfect example of when chapter 11 is and should be used.
When all cards are stacked against you. There is no choice but to.
Many rich and famous people have filed chapter 11 to help them keep going and stand on there feet. Even the egotistic Donald Trump has filed for chapter 11.
I view this as a positive step.
Good luck.

Since when is it OU responsibility to attend to anything else, but whether the meat is kosher or not. But you should be happy, since there is no production there is really no OU. At least the illigal immigrant workers have hope for change now. Obama will give them amnesty, so instead of earning their living at the oppressive Agri processors they will be able to join the ranks of welfare recepients, so that you can finally stop being selfish ant take care of people in need.

There have been some great rabbis who were vegetarians, including Rabbi Dovid Cohen z'tz'l and Rabbi Shlomo Goren z'tz'l.
This situation is terrible for the creditors who lent money on good faith. I pray that Agriprocessors is able to reorganize and pay their creditors in full. If not, the creditors may end up owning the company.

There is adequate supply of kosher meat, this is not Russia, other companies exist and will pick up the slack.Prices will not go sky high.Todays enviroment will not allow it.
In addition it appears that the matsav in Agri was not so rosy, they did not accumulate 50 to a 100 million in debt in the last couple of months.
LASTLY:Eating meat is not healthy. It would be great if we went back to the old times of eating meat on yom tov and chicken on shabbos.

Nov 05, 2008 at 02:28 PM Only Teshuva can Save the Situation Says:
I am not NAMING and NAMES, of WHO needs to do Teshuva but if anyone "tries on the hat" and it fits, obviously it is meant only for whomever "the hat fits" and if you disagree, then you shouldn't be insulted because we couldn't have possibly meant "you".
In reality we ALL (every single one of us all), ALL need to do Teshuva.
The only answer is Teshuva.
All Yidden have to do Teshuva all the time, but when a major tragedy strikes, Chazal Say "Yefashfesh B'Maasov" and the Rambam says it is Midas Achzorias to say "Mikre Nikra" Chas Vesholom.
1) Needless to say that anyone who has a hand in throwing out any Mara Deasra out of his office, has a lot of Teshuva to do and needs to ask mechila and make amends.
2) Needless to say that anyone who doesn't pay any Mara Deasra for several years and then "does a favor" (only because of the condition of the loan he got and only because of that he) pays barely 1/2 the agreed upon salary without any of the years worth of the arrears, owed pay, has a lot of Teshuva to do.
3) Needless to say that if the KAJ had to remove their Hechsher, for KASHRUS REASONS, (from any establishment doesn't matter which one) we should ask KAJ for suggestions how to improve the Kashrus instead of FRESSING "a lower standard Kashrus" (Beloshon Nekiya) and now, be left with nothing at all.
4) Needless to say that anyone who attempts to be a dictator al hatziburm and to then install fake "rabbis" to dictate to the tzibur against the will of the people has a lot of Teshuva to do.
It's only Miktzas Shvocho Befonov and only the Tip of the Iceberg but a good start nonetheless.

None of this would have happened if the laws in question were not broken. The point is not that they've been persecuted more than others or given more enforcement than others, but if you break any laws, no matter how miniscule, law enforcement has a right to uphold the law wether there is an agenda or not. Bottom line: If you don't break any laws, then you would'nt give any reason for ICE or other agencies to go after you. That being said and as a fellow yid, I wish them well and hope that some good will come out of all this for all involved.

This is an OU/KAJ sh'chita exclusivly sold at NPGS. If you are going to Lakewood it might be worth it to bring a cooler to fill up for your trip home. Buy a bag of ice to throw on top of it and it will last for hours!

this sounds like a modern day slavita shas story. although rabbi heineman is not reb akiva eiger, nevertheless it was a tremendous bizoyan hatorah when they vilified and smeared him for starting a shchita (i think it was called Davids) which by the way would have kept down the price of kosher meat

My wife and I decided to try to do all our meat purchases at Rubashkin's on 14th Ave (Brooklyn). They need our moral and our financial support. Maybe a few mistakes were made, but they don't deserve all this "holier-than-thou" bashing. I grew up with them, even lived in their basement after a fire left our family without a home. The entire Rubashkin family are from the finest around.
To all you bashers: you're not even 1% compared to them.

If this what Hashem wants, then we must accept it. Perhaps Hashem is sending a message, with the AgriProcessors bankruptcy and the philanthropy problem.
Perhaps it is time to reexamine where the source of the chesed money comes from, and adopt greater ehrlichkeit in business dealings.

Please post on your website:
Due to the May immigration RAID:
Our small town of Postville has reduced in population from 3000 to 2200. We have 850 housing units of which 300-400 are directly connected to Agriprocessors or people who derive their living from Rubashkins in some way. The housing market has plummeted due to the raid.
There are approximately 100 committed Postville families (own a home etc.) who have not seen a paycheck for several weeks and don't know how long it will be until they do see one.
We are running out of money to pay utilitys, water, gas etc.
With out talking about money for basic food !
These people are still teaching, cooking for yeshiva bochrim, and shechting for free!! They are Jewish mothers who are standing on the assembly line packing chickens to be shipped to YOUR grocery.
These families are committed to Agriprocessors and to Postville.
We don't have any other source of income but Agri,
This will be a big mitzva if u can help
We have a non-profit, tax-deductible fund set up for the benefit of these working families. Receipts will be mailed to you. For donations, see below:

It is an outrage that we have been so used to fressing every type of meat and steak thats out there with out any regard for halacha and yiras hashem. In the olden days yidden kept meat for special occasions and for shabbos and yom tov and did not dare to consume the amounts of meat that we are doing today. This country is so dead spoilt and megushem you people dont know whats in store for you and how you will cope when the ecconomy really shatters and people will be left penniless and without any means to buy any of the luxuries you are all so used to ”
Hmmm. Before Rubashkin's rise to fame, pizza is and remains the fress of the day. So you think Hashem likes us etaing pizza better? Or is pizza about to implode as well?

the court appoints an overseer he decide what happens etc.
but the main is the farshulteneh goverment will not get one red cent in fines for what they did
and people be aware this (a ice raid) can happen to any business i know it happened to me here in brooklyn and it cost me money and i also went out of buisness so be carefull what you wish for
and besides now with our new president the unions just got alot stronger and they will be comming to every SMALL business in new york to unionize so when they come after you remeber what your comments or thoughts were today
let us all pray that we love our fellow yid and that we are truely zoicheh to the geulah now
may hashem have pity on us all and take us out of this golus ”
Try complying with the Laws of the land not hiring illegals, properly pay sales and other taxes, and complying with the OSHA laws and maybe the "farshulteneh government" won't bother you....
It never ceases to amaze me how many frum yidden think they are above the law and that laws are only desgined for "naarisheh goyim"--not "kligeh yidden" and then scream and cry about the government when they get caught and penalized....

Rubashkin gets prison sentence
A son of Agriprocessors Inc. founder Aaron Rubashkin was sentenced Tuesday to 16 months in federal prison for his role in having hazardous waste stored illegally in a Pennsylvania textile mill he owned with his son.
Moshe Rubashkin, 50, of New York City pleaded guilty to charges in February after a federal investigation found that he and his son, Sholom Rubashkin, 29, had stored containers of hazardous waste at Montezz Textiles in Allentown, Pa.
Sholom Rubashkin — who is the nephew of ex-Agriprocessors leader Sholom Rubashkin — pleaded guilty to one count of making a materially false statement to EPA investigators. He is to be sentenced Dec. 29.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials and local authorities found that the plant had various hazardous wastes stored there without the necessary environmental permits after the plant was closed in 2001.
A major cleanup of the plant was ordered by the EPA after two fires had occurred at the site after it closed.
Over the next few months, there were three more fires — one of which was attributed to arson.
U.S. District Judge James Knoll Gardner ordered Moshe Rubashkin to pay $7,500. Gardner also ordered Moshe Rubashkin and Sholom Rubashkin to pay $450,000 in restitution.
"These defendants demonstrated an utter disregard for the safety of the community surrounding their Allentown business," said Acting U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid. "It is only proper that they should have to bear the cost of cleaning up the site and serve a term of imprisonment."

A look at the bankruptcy list includes Rabbi Weismandl as a creditor, but does not list Rabbi Zeilengold. Rabbi Zeilengold is a Rubashkin relative that gives hashgacha to the non-glatt meats.
Charity begins at home, I guess.

The Rubashkins indeed need our chizzuk now. They were overcome with greed and their yezher hora took over them, not only here but in their plants in Allentown, PA. They need our pity and our forgiveness. We need to tell them we forgive them but what they did was wrong. It was a chillul Hashem and they must make it right. And Crown Heights cannot put a Rubashkin as a leader of a Crown Heights Community Council in charge of federal funds weeks after he was let out of prison. By doing so they have blessed the horrible acts they have perpetrated and are telling the world that Lubavitch does not follow the laws of our land.
The Rabbis inform us (Talmud Shabbos 31a) that the first question asked to us after death by the heavenly tribunal is “were you honest in your business dealings?”

I disagree. We do not need them in any business situation. We do not need them in charge on people and money.
I believe that Sholom was a rabbi in Chabad when he went to work for his father. I would not doven in a shul where he would be the 'spiritual leader'.
All the white prople look at Jesse Jackson with distain and mistrust. He fathered a child with a secretary, while he was councelling Clinton how to be faithful. Hypocrite!!
Same with Rubashkin. I cannot trust someone who MANY MANY TIMES fooled the public and created the biggest Chillul Hashem ever (on a worldwide scale).
After this plays out, I want to see what their actions are. Will they publically state that they did no wrong? Will they take the assets and live on that while leaving hundreds of ruined lives behind? Think of all the goyim that curse their name. Think of the Yidden who lost their parnossa because of greed.

Give THEM chizuk? THEY endured tzaros?
Everything that they did was a direct result of THEIR actions.
We should give chuzuk to the workers (jewish and non-Jewish) that are out of jobs.
We should give chizuk to the store owners who were put out of business by the Rubashkin family.
We should give chizuk to the store owners who, temporarily, cannot get meat. The prices will go up in a SMALL WAY for a few weeks, then the supply will get better.
We should give chizuk to creditors of Rubashkin (many, many jews on that list) who just lost their shirts because of the bankruptcy.
THAT is who we should give chizuk to. Giving chzuk to the Rubashkins only empowers them to do it again.
