Tehran - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has congratulated Barack Obama on his election win — the first time an Iranian leader has offered such wishes to a U.S. president-elect since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Ahmadinejad sent a message to Obama in which he congratulated the Democrat on "attracting the majority of voters in the election."

The text of the note was carried by the official IRNA news agency on Thursday.

In the message, Ahmadinejad also says he hopes Obama will "use the opportunity to serve the (American) people and leave a good name" during his term in office.

Iran and U.S. have no formal diplomatic relations since 1979 and the hostage drama when militant Iranian students held 52 Americans captive 444 days.

Who knows? Maybe Obama can cajole them into backing down from some of their craziness. As nuts as the Iranians can be, we have to remember that unlike the guerrilla terrorist groups Iran supports, Iran is a state with an infrastructure and an economy, etc. So they can't just take crazy risks and then just melt into the background if they get smacked down.

Has President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appointed Rabbi Friedman as the Iranian Chief Rabbi yet? He could represent the Iranian President as functions in the US since I assume he travels with a US passport.

If Obama wants to pacify his critics he has to show us that he isn't going to fall for Ahmadinejad's BS mind games.

Stupid to think that Obama can cajole them into backing down from some of their craziness. What can he say or do to cajole Ahmadinejad? You can't change somebody’s mind if he knows already what you’re going to tell him and wants to do what he wants to do anyways. The only thing that Ahmadinejad can tell him to cajole him is that he'll do the job for them, and they should play along with him.

Look, all Obama needs to do is sit them down a say: okay, cut it out or face the consequences. If they don't cut it out, then they should face the consequences. Hopefully by then we'll have a spare brigade or two from Iraq, because right now the response would probably be something like "yeah, you and what army?"

McCain in 2012??? Come on, he'll be 80 years old. He did a good job of hanging in there this time (barely) but was no match for the energetic Obama. Palin perhaps, but no McCain. Besides, if you paid attention, McCain was too much the gentleman unwilling to say things that would sound hurtful etc. Not that I endorse mud-slinging, but if you want to win one must play along with the team. McCain looked lost during the campaign. I felt so sorry for him. He was beaten silly.

Palin is the one for 2012 and 2016. She's a woman who speaks her mind regardless of what her handlers instruct.
