Israel – Local residents along with civic and religious leaders are going to great lengths to shut down a newly opened gym exclusively for ultra-Orthodox Jewish women in Bnei Brak, including the use of children who are engaging in acts of vandalism and harassment against its members.

YNETNEWS.com (http://bit.ly/1LRcluH) reports that the gym was opened by the husband and wife team Sara and Yehuda Ganot, who, as veteran gym owners, thought it would be a good idea to have separate spaces for men and women, but the couple says that since they rented the new studio several months back they have been met with “systematic harassment.”
Sara Ganot believes the hostility stems from a widespread perception that the gym is immodest and that its existence increases the number of women on the streets of the conservative religious Bnei Brak.
“The neighbors began this violent saga against women in the (ultra-Orthodox) sector,” Ganot said. “Children throw stones, they print posters and distribute them to every woman who comes to register and train. The posters say that it is forbidden to work out at our gym. A rabbi who lives on the street says he is not prepared to accept a gym on the street because it will bring more women outside.”
Chas v’shalom a woman should exit the kitchen and do something positive for her health.
There are frum gyms in Yerushalayim so why not in Bnei Brak?
Just when you thought it couldn’t get crazier……., it always gets crazier!
We live in a sick world. What is wrong with a woman going to the gym?????????
These ppl need to get a life, period!
men and women everywhere go to gyms. something is being left out of this report.
Is the Talibanization of Bnei Brak?
I dont believe this story. Missing information.
I think the reason the Rabbis are against women going to the gym is that they might become too healthy, and they won’t daven by “Refoaynu” with enough Kavanah.
I bet you if Harav Vozner was alive he wouldn’t allowed to close it down. He had a Real Das Torah and knew from Right and Wrong.
Where is Harav Landau? Whats his opinion on this subject?
The only problem I can see that maybe the Rabbi on the block knows of a few MEN molesters who are NOT on the sex offenders list because they keep all cases sealed in rabbinical circles and he is afraid that if many women start coming in and out of the building then those molesters will have an attempt and will cause problems..
Duuuuuh….women can ONLY leave the house if they are working to support their family (preferably while pregnant each year)…otherwise, their being outside is a shanda.
I started calling going to the bathroom, going to the Jim instead of going to the John. When I wake up I tell my wife that I went to the Jim 3 times last night!
And I missed going to the gym today!
That makes it five years in a row!
while it does seem strange to us, i am sure there could be a quieter street where the gym can operate. maybe its on a street where it is just too busy, open or who knows what. if we don’t believe in their way of doing things , doesn’t mean they can/t compromise to have a peaceful agreement.
It doesn’t always have to be our way
Women in New Square are not even allowed to have stationery exercise bikes or treadmills in their homes. Most of them have them hidden in a back closet so that they don’t get in trouble.
Guys, this obviously isn’t the whole story – it just doesn’t make sense. the way the article makes it sound though is sickening to say the least. Hashem yirachem …how lost are we?
Why do the ladies need the gym?
We like our wives become fat and unhealthy!
In olden times all the people did many physical activities in their regular routine, today – where else can they go to?
You will end up somewhere, a doctor or the gym, it’s up to you to decide where you want to be!
(I personally signed up at least 20 people to a gym including my family)
In our crazy time anything is possible, But I lived in Bnei Brak until recently, and I dont think most people would care two cents about a womens gym. The women are on the street anyway. Havent these people ever been on Rabbi Akiva street? Its filled with dress stores and sheitel salons.
I would like to see more reporting in this story. Something doesnt add up.
Yet these husband shlubs want their wives to be size 2’s and wear European modern fashions while they wear Euopean fashions from the 1700s!
You mean there are women living in Bnei Brak???!!!!
