Manhattan, NY - After an overall renovation, courtesy people working day in and day out and donations poring in from all quarters, the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is back in business.

It is thrown open to the public with a two-day celebration at Pier 86 in Manhattan. The museum on the Hudson River was renovated at a cost of $120 million. The refurbishment took a couple of months less than two years.

Describing the overhauled museum, Bill White, the president said, "We have 18 interactive exhibits where we can get up on, hands on. You have the steering wheel of an Intrepid. You can steer the ship. You can learn how to get in the cockpit and take simulator rides over Iraq and Afghanistan and understand what it is like to serve in our nation's military."

Right at the entrance, the 50-foot video wall gives the feeling that one is at the sea. Simulators of various kinds installed at the museum let one experience a space capsule, jet flying and steering a massive vessel.

Also making a return was a submarine that resides next to the Intrepid.

The World War II aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, the submarine USS Growler, and a Lockheed A-12 supersonic reconnaissance plane are on display at the museum. The museum is the focal point for the annual Fleet Week events. During the inquiry of the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, the Intrepid served as provisional field command center for the FBI

The museum was opened in 1982 by Zachary Fisher, a prominent New York real estate developer and philanthropist. Since then more than 10 million visitors have toured the Intrepid.

What they don't say is what kind of technological upgrades they gave it to serve as a base station in the event of a major disaster such as occured on 9/11. For those who remember, on and after 9/11 the Intrepid was used by the FBI, CIA and other top secret government offices as a base station and they then said it would remain available for future such occurrances should the nned arise. I believe that part of the plans of revitalizing the ship was to enable it to be used in our area as such.

What a huge let down. I went on11/20/98. You saw the bridge, flight deck, and hanger deck. You wer not allowed to see the rest of the ship. In the hanger deck you did not even know you were on a ship. It was like a poorly done museum, not a ship. The submarine was not even open. You saw the planes from a distance. The web site is better than doing the actual tour. If you want to see an aircraft carrier, go see the Yorktown. There you will get to see the whole ship.
