Postville, IA - A federal prosecutor warned Wednesday that if a judge releases Sholom Rubashkin from jail, the former Agriprocessors executive could quickly flee to Israel.

“The risk of flight here is acute, it’s too great,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Deegan said in court.

But Rubashkin’s lawyer said his client is tightly tied to his family and the community of Postville, where he ran the packing plant for years. The lawyer, Baruch Weiss, added that Israel has a strong extradition agreement with the United States. Even if he somehow could get to Israel after surrendering his U.S. passport, Weiss said, Rubashkin surely would be sent back. “With these sorts of charges, he will not find a home in Israel, and he knows that.”

Rubashkin was arrested Friday on a federal bank-fraud charge. He had been free on bond after being charged last month with conspiring to hire undocumented workers. Weiss asked Magistrate Judge Jon Scoles to release Rubashkin after increasing the bond to $2 million and ordering him to stay in his house or in the homes of friends or relatives in Iowa or elsewhere. He said dozens of friends and relatives were willing to put up their homes as collateral for the bond.

Scoles said he would consider the matter and make a written ruling, probably on Thursday. Rubashkin was returned to jail, at least for the night.

The plant has been struggling to survive since May, when immigration agents raided it and arrested nearly 400 workers.

Many places in this world Do NOT have any extradition treaty with the USA. (not saying he would or would not try to flee)

So to all that posted their doubts whether anti semitisim plays a key role in this case now its becoming crysral clear.
First they chain him hands waist and feet very uncomon for a white collar arrest then they keep him locked up for a week & now this..
this is outrageus behavior by the authorities

I think this is standard procedure for the feds, particularly when someone is arrested for an alleged violation while already out on bail. I agree this seems harsh, but that does not mean it is anti-semitism.

Judges don't understand what a frum Yid is. They look at us through the lens of how they see all the crooks they deal with. Indeed, they see him as the same crook as any other, charity ahinn, charity aherr! Charity can reduce his sentence by a small percent, nothing major. So, is there anti-semitism here? Maybe, but not for sure.

I've been following your statements over the past week or so. I know it's you because you continue to write with the same ferocity and surety.

I've been learning the teachings of our Sages in our Holy Torah for many years and I can tell you fiercely and with surety this:

You are bringing Din on yourself and on our people!

It is very obviously a double standard, almost all people charged with bank fraud have been out on bail, were not talking about a murderer or rapist,
Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling of Enron, Bernie Ebbers of Worldcom, just a few of recent famous fraudsters were all out on bail,
They stole and commited much larger frauds,

Mr. Rubashkin should be treated just like anyone else and he isnt ,

I was once a Rav in an out of town community. There was no high quality kosher meat. I spoke to the supermarket about ordering it. I told them that I have 40 families that would buy. And that I could get 60 more families to come from further away. They agreed. Rubashkin sent a truck all the way out. It actually did not pay for them to send the truck. They continued and continued.

I am a Frum Yid who was arrested awhile back for the same charges. The prosecutors had me in Jail for a few days using the same argument, that I would flee to Israel because my passport showed I was there 25 times.. He will get released I am sure. They have no basis to keep him.. But this blog brings out terrible things in fellow Jews who are going thru hard times regardless of whether they are to blame or not, or are guilty are not, which he hasnt been convicted of anything. The best thing that we all could do for him is pray and be good unopinionated, non-judgemental, Jews.. Hashem is the ONLY JUDGE. Nobody on this blog.

I pray for him and his family that Hashem should shower blessing on the Rubashkins.

So if you have nothing positive to say on here than please keep it to yourself. Dont forget Hashem will judge you they way you judge.

You are so right, but unfortunately there are some people around, born with very rotten bad natures, some with severe jealousy, some are simply depressed people brought up in an abused home or being abused now, and they come here to shoot out their pain on other suffering people.
that's the only way i can explain it.
