Suffolk County police say the driver of the car that hit the patient Monday night in Holtsville, on Long Island, then fled the scene.

Police say 51-year-old Frank Ligrnetta, of Bay Shore, was being taken from Stony Brook University Hospital to a facility in Amityville at the time.

They say he was with an attendant in the back of the ambulance when he “exited” the moving vehicle. It’s not clear how or why he did that.

The patient died at the scene.

The investigation into the circumstances of the death is continuing.

There was a case with Hatzalah where the back door opened (it malfunctioned) and the stretcher came out and the woman on the stretcher fell onto the roadway, but she was lucky, she was retrieved without harm. Oy.
