Tel Aviv - A man who was stabbed to death earlier in the day by a Palestinian armed with a knife on a popular boardwalk in Tel Aviv, has been identified as an American tourist from Texas.
Taylor Force, who is is from Lubbock Texas, and a student at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee was in Israel for a school trip, according to a letter from Chancellor Nick Zeppos to the university community.
Zeppos said in his letter that Force, a student at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, died after a “stabbing attack” in Tel Aviv. Other students, faculty and staff on the trip were not hurt, Zeppos said.
The trip was meant to focus on global entrepreneurship. Force was expected to “share his insights and knowledge with start-ups in Israel,” Zeppos said.
Zeppos said Force “exemplified the spirit of discovery, learning and service that is the hallmark of our wonderful Owen community.”
“This horrific act of violence has robbed our Vanderbilt family of a young hopeful life and all of the bright promise that he held for bettering our greater world,” Zeppos said.
Stuart Force, Taylor’s father, spoke briefly with the Associated Press by phone from his home in Texas.
“He was a great kid,” he said before he received a call from family and ended the conversation.
Force, is a former Field Artillery Officer for the US Army in Fort Hood Texas, according to his linkedin page.
The attack took place in the popular Jaffa port area, which is a favorite spot among tourists.
According to Palestinian reports, the terrorist who killed Force was identified as Bashar Massalha, 22, from the village of Uja in the Kalkiliya area. The reports noted that Massalha had returned from a visit to Saudi Arabia’s Mecca the week before.
The assault came as Biden arrived on a two-day visit as part of a regional tour of the Mideast. He is to meet both Israeli and Palestinian leaders and there have been speculations he would try to revive the moribund Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
