The New York City Transit division says it gives passengers the notes so they can prove they're not lying about being delayed while riding the subway.
Passengers request the delay verification letters over the phone.
NYC Transit verifies the date and time of the delay and sends an official note in the mail in one or two weeks. It mails 34,000 notes a year.
Each letter shows the subway line taken and the durations of the trip and the delay.
NYC Transit is working on an online system so it can accept Internet requests and e-mail the excuse letters.

Well said #1 & #2... We now are seeing the stupidity of wasteful government spending on a local level. But we all have an individual responsibility to be on time and respect other people's time.

So if there is a major scare/threat to the subways and they were to close them all down for a couple of hours-does that mean they are prepared to write, and mail out over 1 million notes in one day?

Skeptical ( and think the whole thing is dum) but this still can work -like this: you are late, you get punished, later on the official note comes through, now you have "one free pass" for the next time you are late. the next time you are late the pass you now have is accepted immediately with no waiting period.........you get the idea.

#6- not true i kow of a school whose takes off points from a students report card if they come late 3 times! and noone can control the bus or train schedule. if a child leaves their house the same time every day there is nothing they can do about what time the bus or train might arrive and if a student gets to school late they are punished even if it is not their fault!!! and the worst part is the school does not excuse them for being late even though it was not their fault! THAT IS NOT RIGHT!
