Washington - Although Americans' attention has been focused primarily on domestic issues, including the sour economy in recent months, this week's deadly attacks in Mumbai are a horrific reminder that the threat of terrorism remains high around the world, including the United States.

The set of coordinated attacks on 10 strategic sites in India's financial capital left more than 150 people dead and hundreds wounded. The terrorists struck luxury hotels, hospitals, a rail station, a well-known restaurant and a Jewish center. Those targets were selected to maximize civilian casualties, and -- much like the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon -- to send a sharp message about the vulnerability of high-profile, symbolic locations.

While planning and training for such attacks require considerable resources, security analysts warn that many nations and cities are at risk of similar atrocities committed by Islamic extremists.

While Spain, Russia, Great Britain and now India have been hit, the U.S. has avoided an attack on the homeland for more than seven years, a mark not achieved by mere good luck but through tough-minded pursuit of terrorist organizations.

It's extraordinarily difficult for on-site security to stop the kind of low grade but deadly assaults that devastated Mumbai. It falls then on strong intelligence gathering to prevent such attacks before they reach the staging point.

The assault on Mumbai is the latest in a long series of outrages committed by barbaric and resourceful killers. It would be foolish to think it will be the last, or that this nation isn't vulnerable.

My older sister (now 67) often relates that our father, OBM, used to have an expression he used frequently: "A greater madness is yet on the way." She found it odd and annoying. For the last few years she has come to see that our father seemed to have an uncanny sense that in some way, our "meshugene velt" was to become even more lawless and unsettled. She now acknowledges the truth of his predictions. Let us now pray that "a greater good is now on the way," with the coming of Moshiach and healing for the world. Our father would like that!

It has become apparent that the paths of appeasement and negotiation with terrorists are useless. In fact, the record suggests that the terror organizations find this civil treatment as reinforcement to continue their evil and destructive ways. This has been proven repeatedly in the Middle East, where there has never been a single concession to the entities of terror that has resulted in anything besides additional atrocities and barbaric terror and torture. The only thing we learn from all this is that terror needs to be fought with equal and opposite challenge. Never negotiate, discuss, or award any measure of civility to any terrorists.

I’m not a politician, but my gut tells me that the reaction to these acts of terror should be coordinating the efforts to eradicate those who perpetrate them. If I were the Indian government, I would order that all those left in this terror gang, including those who are incarcerated, but slaughtered immediately. Not one should be left alive. There is no other antidote to terror besides its complete elimination. Perhaps this lacks a bit of bitachon, but that is the only rational hishtadlus. The same goes for the murderous terror gangs of Hamas and their ilk. We should forget about the badmouthing that we will get from the UN – a rogue collection of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel representatives. They will condemn Israel anyway. Let it be with many fewer terrorists left. And we need to adopt a policy that anyone guilty of terror is put to death immediately. It is not civil to allow them to live in captivity where they become the bargaining chip for more terror. They know of no consequences to their behavior. Let them suffer and die. The other options do not work. I’m not being cruel, just efficient. Any other ideas?
