Savannah, GA - A Savannah family is taking a leap of faith and hoping their fundraiser goal can be met by Thursday. That's when their two-year-old son heads to New York for what could be a lifesaving therapy. Problem is, the family's insurance company refuses to fund it. The price tag is $125,000.

The Landons are squeezing as much family fun in as they can, because come Thursday, they'll be separated. Two-year-old Menschi and mother Miriam will be off to New York as Menschi undergoes a five-month therapy to treat his Neuroblastoma: a cancer that only affects children. Although they've only raised nearly half the money to fund it, they're going on faith and the hope some helping hands will reach out.

"Hopefully we'll get there. I don't want to let money stand in the way of giving my son better odds at survival,” his mother Miriam said.

Since January, Menschi's faced chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, but cancer spots remain. After researching, Miriam believes this particular therapy will do wonders.

"Although it's a painful procedure, it actually attaches to neuro-cells, which causes some bone pain and nerve pain, I feel that it's worthwhile because for five months of treatment, if he can have a lifetime, it's worth it,” Miriam Landon said.

The family understands they have a lot of speed-bumps raising funds right now, the struggling economy, holiday season and short time frame, just to name a few. However, there's a big selling point that may win some hearts.

"They have the opportunity to save a life here,” father Shmuel Landon said.

"Thank God we understand what we need to do and we're wiling to do whatever we need to do to get it done,” Miriam Landon said.

If you'd like to help Menschi get this lifesaving therapy, contact the Jewish Federation of Savannah at 912-355-8111. Tell them you want to donate to the Landon family fund.

chanieb - you are right on target. They have contacted everyone and anyone including insurance people, Congressmen, Senators, and all of the Jewish tzeddakah organizations. Tizki lemitzvos. Give whatever you can and pass the message to your friends and family so they too have an opportunity to participate in hatzalas nefashos.

They are getting a treatment called 3F8 Antibody Therapy. What its supposed to do is create antibodies in the body that will attack cancer cells as they come up. The procedure will be done in Sloan Kettering.

I spoke to rccs yesterday re this case and they have NOT contacted rccs. if rccs can help there would be no need to collect this amount of money. be very careful about what you quote if you don't know!

I'm absolutely livid. How dare you second guess their story? Did it ever cross your mind that RCCS wouldn't give out the names of their clients to protect their privacy? They are working with the family to get the insurance in order. I think you should read their blog. (see link at the end of above article.) Maybe it would help clarify things for you. Maybe you want to contact Bikur Cholim too, to find out if they are really coming to New York on Thursday and if they are really going to be using their apartment in Boro Park. While you are at it, call Sloan and see if they have an appointment scheduled.

If your family isn't dealing with these issues, then should be thankful. If you unfortunately have to deal with these issues, then you should be more understanding. In either case, you should be out there trying to help, not putting doubt in everyone's minds.
