New York - NY Daily News Shames CBS Report On Hasidic Adultery As Pure Trash And Baloney |
|
After watching WCBS/Ch. 2's two-part sweeps "exclusive" last week about members of the Hasidic Jewish community who cheat on their wives and Hasidic couples who swing, well, it's hard to argue the viewers are wrong.
Before the first piece aired, Ch. 2 anchor Kristine Johnson told viewers that the station was revealing "a side of that community that is rarely seen; some are straying far from their beliefs, breaking their marital vows with other community members."
People cheat on their spouses?
Shocking!
What's more shocking, though, is that Ch. 2 spent three months - a quarter of a year - uncovering this so-called scandal at a time when TV news budgets, including payrolls, are being slashed.
"There are some married Hasidic men and woman who sneak away from their ultrareligious lives," reporter Dave Carlin intoned. "They use the Internet to break their vows and break Jewish law."
Carlin delivered every word as if he was auditioning for "CSI," and in a manner suggesting that what he was saying carried life-changing significance.
Yeah, like the brain cells people lost watching.
Carlin talked to one man, who, with his face blurred, admitted to cheating on his wife. And he talked to a woman who discussed what it was like to be in an arranged marriage - and to ultimately leave.
The piece was called "Sacred Vows, Secret Affairs."
It should have been called "More Sweeps Crap."
Reporting on issues involving the Hasidic community is a valid exercise, no doubt. The insular nature of the community makes it largely unknown to most people, and there is some intrigue.
But please, have a real reason for doing it. Give viewers a valid insight into people who make up a part of this city.
Don't make it, as this clearly was, TV titillation during the home stretch of a sweeps (a ratings period, it should be noted, that was mostly marked this time around by extra stories of snake-oil beauty treatments and health updates).
"You know, Dave," Johnson said after the first of two pieces aired, "people at home are probably saying to themselves, affairs happen in all communities."
Sure, there probably were people making that observation - those who weren't swearing at their TVs at that point.
"We're not trying to point a finger or call out any one group or community," Carlin said. "But as we looked into this over three months, the stories themselves, the emotion coming out from these individuals is so compelling."
That, folks, is pure baloney.
No wonder viewers lose faith.

Impressive work.
Had they interviewed people who are still in our community they might have had a story.
2 dropouts don't tell anything about a community.

Not so. It makes perfect sense. Their is a hidden agenda here-
The goal is to take peoples minds off the real issues of the day. Better to talk about sex than disclose how close Iran is to a nuclear bomb. Better to talk about which basketball player is breaking the law than to talk about the economy, etc.

I'm not surprised that it took 3 months to find these 2 misfits who engage in such things. If it were more common it wouldn't take that long. If you look long enough you will find aberations such as these, but in this immoral society, we stand apart and over 99% of Yiddin don't even come close to engaging in such.

Wait until they do their upcoming report on Shoplifting in the Amish community !
They are spending 3 months on an in-depth secret investigation.
It will feature one ex-Amish man, and one ex-Amish woman (whose faces and voices will be blurred). They will speak about the time that they took a newspaper and didn't pay for it.
This will prove the out-of-control phenomenon of rampant theft and shoplifting among the Amish communities which nobody has ever been able to access...
3 staff members are taking a 3-month paid period to disappear and come back with "revelations" and "interviews" on this magic "discovery".
Sounds like a great idea, no?
If they were to find two African Americans who agree to be "interviewed" with their faces distorted, and who admitted to having sex with animals - would CBS then show a feature expose' about "The black community and their perverted animal fetishes"? I would love to see the new Obama administration and the NAACP have a crack at them, and get millions in fines from the FCC !!!

Yossi you say 90% are happy?? are you out of your mind? A big big percentage of chassidish marriages are only together because of pressure from the community they live in.
The fact that there are fewer divorces in the chassidish community, is in no way an indication that people there are more happily married. Sorry to burst the bubble, i am just sick of hearing from everyone the chassidish marriages work so well.

People, do you remember the New York magazine's article on Gitty Greenwald? Do you know how many hits their website got the following weeks? The amount of comments on this story was (I think) 6 times the most commented article up until then.
That is the reason CBS2 did this thing, they realized that stories on the Hasidic community bears fruit. And in these economic times, Who doesn't need a boost?
Had we ignored this outrageous article in the NY mag, this would not happen. Lets learn from our mistakes and disregard these nonsense articles from now on.

Unimpressive reporting but the reality is that there is plenty of crap going on.. every so often a scandal comes to light and it only makes you wonder how many more go unoticed...
The happy marriage scenario holds true for a large percentage, based on our family oriented lifestyle and the fact that we all come from similar backgrounds, similar aspirations for life, and we do get married young enough to grow together. But for very very many the system does fail them - people stay in unhappy marriages mostly for the sake of their kids, due to peer pressure and the stigma divorce comes with in our community. So so many out there.

By their own admission they interviewed 2 people WHO LEFT THE COMMUNITY. So there were no chassidic persons interviewed. They interview a modern orthodox rabbi who had TWO sons forced from the rabbinate due to sexual impropriety to get his spin on the chassidic community, a community he has been bashing for over 30 years. One of this rabbi's congregants was a Rockland county DA also forced to resign because of sexual improprieties to the embarassment of the entire orthodox community. Case in point, in his interview in the book Boychiks in the Hood. (Harper 1995 pp. 200-203) This Rabbi says that the Lubavitch chasidim remained orthodox under communist Russia because people thought they were crazy, so Stalin simply ignored them. 70 years later when perestroika dawned, thousands of Lubavitchers came crawling out of the wood work. This is how he refers to the chasidim that were hunted, persecuted, prosecuted, imprisoned, tortured, exiled an executed for keeping yiddishkeit with mesiras nefesh. This is the rabbi that refers to the Jews who watched their families murdered in front of their eyes. suffered the horrors of Auschwitz, came to America with the shirts on their backs and raised the level of kashrus, shmiras Shabbos, davening, learning, etc. in America as: "those hungarians... uch!" in recorded YU lecture. This is the rabbi that brags in a recorded lecture that after his "medical" paper attacking bris milah was rejected twice by JAMA (because it's garbage) he violated editorial policy by having six non-authors sign on in an effort to force Pediatrics to accept it. This is the objective source they quote.
