Jerusalem - Masses arrived at Kfar Chabad on Tuesday to attend a memorial ceremony for Rivka and Gavriel Holtzberg, the Chabad emissaries who were murdered, alongside four other Jews, in the terror attack on Chabad House in Mumbai, India last week.

Tehilim were recited at the beginning of the ceremony, which was attended by President Shimon Peres, government ministers, Knesset members, Chabad emissaries from around the world and official Indian representatives,

The funeral procession is scheduled to depart later for the Mount of Olives cemetery in Jerusalem, where the couple will be laid to rest.

Rivka's parents intend to take over the running of Mumbai's Chabad House, until another emissary is chosen, a Chabad representative said Tuesday. He added that the parents wished to reestablish the Jewish center in the city.

Peres: Our pain knows no boundaries

President Shimon Peres said during the ceremony: "For several days now, the entire world, and certainly the Jewish world, owes an answer to the question of one two-year-old child called Moishi. We must explain to him why his mother was murdered. Anyone who has a child must ask this question. Those who have no pity for children will not pity mothers or fathers."

He went on to say, "Moishi bears not only a question, but also solace. He will grow up and carry on with this great and important mission… an entire nation weeps today…the entire Jewish people is a one, big family whose pain knows no boundaries, but nor does its hope."

The president also stated that terror must be uprooted, as it represented a threat to the world.

Kfar Chabad's rabbi, Mordechai-Shmuel Ashkenazi was the first speaker at the service. "God promises us that mitzvah emissaries will not be harmed. They were slaughtered with a Torah book and phylacteries in their hands.

"Why? Why? Jews who dedicated their life to God, to bringing more unity to the people of Israel and to spreading the word of the Torah in remote places."

'Moishi, you will remain an emissary'

Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice chairman of the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch, said that the Chabad House in Mumbai will be rebuilt and named after Rivka and Gavriel. "Moishi, this will be your home to return to; from there you will draw strength," he told the emissaries' two-year-old son Moshe-Zvi.

Kotlarsky added, "What can I say Moishi? You don’t have a mother and a father to hold you in their arms. No parents to hug and kiss you. You will be the child of the entire nation of Israel. You are an emissary, and an emissary you shall remain."

Kotlarsky also sent a message to Chabad's entire emissaries abroad: "Now is the time to be strong; this is not a time to think or ask questions but for action. The answer to terror will not be given with tanks and grenades. Such cruelty can only be fought against by spreading light."

Israel's two chief rabbis, Shlomo Amar and Yona Metzger both spoke at the service. Rabbi Metzger broke into tears during his eulogy, when he said: "No one can break us. We should all stay strong and carry on with their mission to bring hearts and people closer.

"I implore the ministers of the government present here, on behalf of Israel's Chief Rabbinate – make sure that every Chabad House is secured, that these embassies of the Jewish people in every city in the world are guarded. So many Israelis enjoy these centers."

The State has a long record of forcing their own world view on others, whether it be cutting off the peyot of Yemenite children, to the forced secularization of Ethiopians, to the forcible wrapping of the victims' coffins in Israeli flags.

Not only was Reb Leibish Teitelbaum HY'D a staunch anti-zionist, but his worldview's morality insisted that he not receive money from the State -- no social security/bituach leumi, and no government handouts. His community even raised over $125,000 to bring the body home to Israel for burial immediately, but Israel's Foreign Ministry refused to allow it....and insisted on flying all the bodies back together, on a IAF plane, wrapped in an Israeli flag.

Sorry but I was involved in trying to get the body's back and YES the heimisher community did raise the money for a privet jet but NO it was not the Israel Government who said then have to go on the IAF jet it was the Indians who would not break the international law that says that bodys must be flown in a steel box and on the privet jet they could not take those boxes so once again its was NOT Israel it was the Indians as they would not turn a blind eye.

its time for democratic countries like India and the USA to follow Chinas lead in protecting Jewish Centers.
In mainland china the Centers are located in walled in gated communities surrounded by a 10-12 foot high concrete wall with electrified barbed wire all around the top of it. In addition there is a guardhouse at the one entrance to the compound and another just outside the Jewish Center. In addition there is an intricate surveillance system which keeps track of all movement inside the compound every square meter. This is why there wont be any 911 like in USA and India. At least there is a first line of defense to sound an alarm!

What are you complaining about "the State" of Israel- there is more learning being subsidized by the "State" of Israel IN Israel right now than ever before in our history. Have a little Hakoras Hatov.

I was in china many times both in shanghai and in guangzhou and you are simply not familiar with the facts. The new place in guangzhou is totaly unprotected and everyone who was there will agree. The place in shanghai is in a gated complex which you blow away with a toy whistel. Hashem needs to protect us and not any police. You have to do what you can but the protection in china is a complete joke and the camera system you are talking about is non existent. The one thing you could learn from the chinese is the reason why there are no terorists in china and the reason is because of the justice they administer for even thinking about terror let alone being caught planning etc. The practice of our garbage liberal human rights for killers and murders is at fault.

Would'nt common sense dictate that it might be a danger to continue building the Chabad house in that part of the world? I mean Jews in the past abandoned the area where they have been persecuted and did not return . why should we endanger additional lives with the prospect of this happening again G-D forbid. I understand the need for resilience and strength but it is quite apparent that they will be a target again especially since the indian security teams were inept and not capable of responding soon enough. There were reports that the Indian police just stood idly by in the streets while the terrorist were shooting. Please explain to me the need to build a Jewish house of worship in an area where there is hostility toward Jews.

Two young parents, who lost one child to Tay Sachs, and had another suffering from the disease, journeyed to Indida to provide a Jewish presence to any Jew who happens to be there. They were murdered for doing that and for no other reason. They left behind a two year old innocent child who saw his parents martyrdom. The entire Jeiwsh world weeps and all you can do is assail the Israeli government? Seems David Hamelech didn't expell all of the Givonim from Klal Yisrael.

Funny that the world media will exhaustively cover the idiotic funerals of every "militant" and "freedom fighter" with their crazed and phsycotic mobs shooting in the air (wazzup with that?) and shrieking revenge. They don't note the stark contrast with the dignified royalty of a Jewish levaya. Or, in their warped mindset of moral equivelance, they'll probably see our calls for Hashem to avenge their blood, as equal to their murderous hysteria.

Hostility towards Jews is unfortunately not limited to that particular area of the world alone, and besides this terror attack was not carried out by locals. Sadly this could have happened anywhere in the world. If you think you're immune to it where you live, we have no idea what our local terrorists right here in Brooklyn are R"L plotting against us. What happened just last Thursday with the NYS Subway System? Would you also say to run from Eretz Yisroel after a terror attack? We must have Siyata Dishmaya wherever we live and not live in fear, but continue serving Hashem and do our part toward fulfilling His will in making this world a dwelling place for Hashem, which is the purpose in our creation. And yes to accomplish that one must spread His light to the farthest reaches of the world.

I respectfully disagree with the concept of "spreading the light". This is a new concept. Avraham Avniu did this at a time when the world did not know of a G-d. In our history, there was never such a movement among our rabbonim.

Yes. But if there was no $125,000 raised who would have gone to India to retreive the remains. We can always rely on Hatzolah, Zaka, and the Israel govt - through the state dpts or through the IDF, IAF etc to rescue a jew - live or dead - from wherever they can get to. They have come to India to help stranded Israelis before. And if a Jew who renounces his govt is held hostage anyplace in the workd - the Israeli gov will come to rescue him. And, I hate to say this, but if somehow we could turn back the history books one week and Reb Teielebauim was still alive, and in the Chabad house, and the Mossad arrived to take him out on an IDF plane - I think he would go, despite the renouncement of his citizenship. May he rest in peace with Hashem and the other kedoshim,

Chabad has just as big a problem with the flag as does Satmar - but Chabad doesn't consider it worth making a machlokes over. Apparently the TAY Rebbe felt the same way, and told people not to make a fuss about the flag; there are more important things to be worried about. So if the Zionists insist on putting a flag, then roll your eyes all you want, but grin and bear it.

Dec 02, 2008 at 11:35 PM Yisroel Says:

Please let us put an end to the vilification of the State of Israel and we will find strength, unity and direction to change our destiny for the redemption of Israel and all mankind. Three times in the history of the Jewish people, 1/3 of our nation has been massacred: Spain, Chmielnicki, and Hitler, y"ms. Since the founding of the State of Israel, in spite of wars and atrocities perpetrated against us, fewer Jews have died in this timespan than any other in our languishing dark days of helpless exile. Let us not bring shame and ridicule to the only country that will ultimately be our hope of physical survival and spiritual salvation.

I am so deeply saddened to see the organizational skills, resources, and energy put into creating, widening and sustaining a schism within the fractured Jewish community. There are already a host of websites where Zionism is used as a pretext to hate Jews. Aren't we supposed to love all Jews, whether they have long hair or shaved heads, a ring in their nose or long side locks?

Contemporarily, we face a war of good vs. evil, a president who exemplifies the righteous Sons of Noah, part of a constituency of over 90 million people who are modest and live decently, and are willingly devoted to supporting Israel because they believe those who bless the Jews will be blessed vs. the majority of Europe and our inner cities who are morally bankrupt, who have acquiesced to being swallowed by the momentum of Islamofascism in the guise of multiculturalism.

We are one people with one destiny and even in the cemetery there are no divisions. The greatest threat to Judaism's survival has been the contemporary freedom of choice and has allowed the Jews to assimilate and disappear in unprecedented numbers. I myself am a descendant of Kohanim and Rabbanim whose entire family (except for my grandmother and her sister) was wiped out in the Minsk pogrom of 1905, 30 years before Hitler, but if not for my younger sister and I there would be no Jews left from my grandmother's 8 children. Intermarriage, conversion, (over 500,000 young people are now Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, cults, Jews for J, and Jews for nothing at all); those who are marginally affiliated may marry, may produce a child, or may choose an alternative lifestyle.

Thus we find ourselves in a world where the new face of Judaism will be Orthodoxy, both in Israel and the diaspora. As such this generation can be fitting to be the generation that ushers in Mashiach. The RAMBAM says that the Geula will happen in a very natural way. Hashem has given us the vessel. We can fill it and sustain it. Over 2000 years ago, a king of Israel who was an idol-worshipper, was blessed by Hashem, that he and his grandchildren would sit on the throne of Israel for one reason only: simply because he added on Shomron to Israel.

Having been without prophecy for thousands of years, no one can speak authoritatively as to how Hashem wants the redemption to come about, and no one can deny the myriad of miracles that have founded and sustained this vessel. Therefore, let us work with the b'di eved (post facto) situation and prepare the groundwork for the achdus that will bring the true love and all the components necessary to be a light unto the nations.

For more enlightened reading, read renowned historian Paul Johnson's "History of the Jews", Mark Twain’s Reports from the Holy Land, Brigitte Gabriel (a Lebanese Christian) "Because they Hate", and Nonie Darwish (an Egyptian Christian) "Now they call me Infidel" and Rav Kook's "Orot", as well as Samuel Katz’s “Battleground”.

These sub-human murderers did not care if they the Jews they murdered were Zionist, reform, Orthodox or anything else, only one thing was first and foremost on their minds, KILL JEWS! The sooner you will realise this fact and stop the bickering and hatered of one Yid to another, the sooner we will be zoche to welcome Mosiach. Please let there be Achdus & Ahavas Yisroeal. Let us speak as ONE people for the love of H"K"B"H. Let us speak loud and clear with one voice the words of Reb Meir Kahane Z"TL "NEVER AGAIN" Let it be known that Jewish blood is not to be shed wantenly. May Hashem avenge the blood of those pure and Holy Souls who died Al Kiddush Hashem. May the Holy One, Blessed be He provide comfort & solice to the familes and all of Klal Yisroeal.
AM YISROEAL CHAI, LEOLAM VOED!

His coffin was not wrapped in a flag, as per his family's request. It was wrapped in a tallit.
