Borough Park, NY - Maimonides Hospital Receives Several 5-Star HealthGrades Ratings |
|
“Five Stars” is the highest rating a hospital can get from HealthGrades. Maimonides Medical Center received more of these five-star ratings than any other hospital in New York City. Maimonides achieved the following distinctions:
Cardiology: Rated No. 1 in New York State for Cardiology Services. Maimonides also ranked among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for cardiology services and cardiac interventions, and is a recipient of the 2009 HealthGrades Coronary Intervention Excellence Award and the 2009 HealthGrades Cardiac Care Excellence Award.
Stroke: Rated among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for Treatment of Stroke. Maimonides is five-star rated in stroke treatment for the seventh consecutive year, and is a recipient of the 2009 HealthGrades Stroke Care Excellence Award.
Critical Care: Rated No. 1 in New York State for Critical Care Services. Maimonides is five-star rated in critical care, and is also a recipient of the 2009 HealthGrades Critical Care Excellence Award. Orthopedics: Maimonides, once again, is five-star rated for Spinal Fusion Surgery.
Pulmonary: Maimonides is five-star rated in Treatment of Pneumonia for the seventh consecutive year.
“We are delighted to be recognized for outstanding quality in so many of our clinical services,” said Maimonides President and CEO Pamela S. Brier. “This is a reflection of our commitment to patients and the high standards set by our physicians, nurses and support staff.”
HealthGrades ratings are based on 40 million hospitalization records from the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. For its tenth annual Hospital Quality in America Study, HealthGrades independently analyzed nearly 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states for its ratings, assessing clinical outcomes and quality.
Maimonides Medical Center is among the largest independent teaching hospitals in the nation, training over 450 medical and surgical residents annually. Maimonides has 705 beds and more than 70 subspecialty programs.

Those of us who use the Hospital, know all too well it's shortcommings.
But for money you can buy anything today, even the Brooklyn Bridge, for the right price:-)

I trust US News & World Report's rankings more than I do Healthgrades, and Maimonides never made it onto any of the top 100 hospitals in the US, for any specialty. I'm not wondering why not; however, I'm wondering what format Healthgrades uses to achieve it's rankings.

But Lets focus on positives A community hospital which is great for frum heimishe patients for shabbos accomodations etc, being able to visit/ stay.
Great frum Doctors with a yiddishe hartz to name a few Josh Kerstein, Gerald hollander, Alvin Greengart, Norman Moskowitz, Yisacher Greinberg, Borgan, Krantz, moshe Kerstein. Sidney Tessler. From Cardiology. They have the Barimteh Dr. Shani and Frankel from the Cath lab, which all Rebbes and Rabanim recomend. Dr. Rudolf a heimishe far strokes. Dr Farkush mishelunie for certain strokes. Dr. Amit schwartz a frum gevaldige Neuro Surgeon with superb results.
In Intensive care they have the famous Dr. Isaac Kufer who was the doctor for the Lubavitcher Rebbe and Bobover Rebbe,
In cancer care they Brought Dr. Bergen from Memorial Sloan Kettering in the city, etc.
They came along way but we are bashing them like thirty years ago. Please a little bit of dignity.
in Addition we now have a wonderful way to resolve issues through the Vad harefuah. Lets stop the nonsense, and the bashing not jeopardize what Maimonides does for the frum community.

All hospitals have problems (usually the nursing...). There are horror stories which happened to my family members in NYU and Columbia Pres. You are all hardly mumchim, even you relatives of Hatzoloh members, about what it takes to run a hospital. I have worked in hospitals all around NY and Maimonides is a fine hospital. Not pretty, some of the ancillary staff could be nasty, etc., but the clinical outcomes are excellent and at the end of the day that os what matters the most, I am sure you will all agree. Stop being kofei tov and motzei shem ra on a hospital you are all choosing to be treated at. Gezunte heyt, run to Manhattan and feel chashuv if you want.

my experience in the hospital as far as treatment and doctors was excellent, but the ER is a nightmare. i dont know if there is a real solution since a big part of Brooklyn come to MMC. i was there wilth a family member recently and by midday the beds are triple lined around the ER. the problem is that there are not enough rooms available each day as they need to admit people and you could be there upto 18-24 hours. there needs to be some major change in the ER.

I couldn't agree more. I've trained there and like any inner city hospital they have their share of problems, but who doesn't? These Boro Parkers think if they can buy million dollar houses, then their hospital should be and give the same royal treatment as a 5 star hotel. Time to grow up and stop the Kofui tov!

What do you know about medicine? All you know is the PR you are fed in your community. If you don't like the hospital don't use it. Hatzolah will take you where you want- they aren't EMS. Stop speaking Motzay shem rah on them. The problem I have with them is they hire a lot of schorim, why can't they hire more yidden, esp. now with the bad economy. BTW, your comment makes absolutely no sense -do you really think MMC hospital staff can't intubate?!

The main reason why the ER is always packed, its because by law, they must treat everyone who comes in wether they are legal or not. The polishe and hungarian goytes go there for treament not to mention the illegal mexicans and arabs. So we only have ourselves to blame for hiring these illegals in the first place. I remember going to the Maimonides ER in the late 60's when I was a child and it was much less crowded and queiter. You reap what you sow.

Raboisai....... I know you have loads of complaints about Maimonides, I do too.. But look at it this way............ It's not easy running a hospital, they try their best. They hire as many good doctors as they possibly can. Yes, I agree, some nurses shouldn't be there. ( I wonder why they even choose this type of job if they hate it so much) It's a pity that these nurses spoil the name of Maimonides. As for the ER, you make it sound as if it's a doctor's office. No, it's not, it's a free for all! Beds are full upstairs, they wish they could get you out of there as soon as possible, but you have to understand that each patient has to go to their designated floor and designated bed. You can't put someone who has heart trouble on a floor that doesnt specialize with those patients. Also, where else can you see at any given time so many heimishe volunteers who try to make your stay a little more comfortable???? Stop bashing and let's look at the good side. We are lucky to have a TZADIK like Douglas Jablon the Pres of the PR dept. ( ok, now please no Douglas bashing! He's not a malech and can't make all mistakes go away, but he sure tries hard ) I bet some of you think that you can do a better job, right? Running a hospital or any institution is not a piece of cake. You can never satisfy EVERYONE all the time. PERIOD!

Just to add my thoughts to this maimonides bashing, this is because we are raising a generation of cynics, they are smarter, understand better, etc.
Now to the point as we all know hospitals around this country raise money to survive financially, now the question to all Chareidishe Maimonides bashers, (and to the blogger who commented above about the communities support to the hospital), when was the last time you donated money to the hospital.
They built a new building and didnt find a sponsor to name the building in his/ her honor. The building is called B building (perhaps in honor of the radio commercial Mr B. from the popular camera store...........) mamesh a shandeh.
Btw, I spent some time in the ER with an elderly parent of mine and was very impressed with the caring doctors, who were in touch with my parents private doctor. the only issue that was bothering me that day was that my Kehilah needs to bash all that is good in their own backyard.......
I think this the problem of our olem, real tzurus is swept under the rug, but we create tzurus where their are none. The same aveirah as with the meraglim, for which we were punished quite severley. Vhameivin yuvine.

Hashem will repay her chesed and kindness and acts of selfless tzedoko with many many years of simchos and happiness and good health for her and her entire family. For all those who bash Maimonides, how about doing something possitive and help the situation????? How about giving them a helping hand to ease some of the problem? Become volunteers. Give Maimonides a couple of hours a week. Don't just stand there and do nothing!!! Yes, they have major issues, but instead of sitting back and criticizing the hospital, do a mitzva by becoming a member of Bikur Cholim. Be glad we have Maimonides in our neighborhood, where every second counts to get their in time, incase of an emergency. Not everyone is capable to give them money, like # 22 suggests but to constantly talk negative and do nothing, that's a shandah. Yes I'm a volunteer too, and I see what goes on all the time. One thing I'd like to correct........ As a Jewish hospital, it's terrible they way the halls are full of X-mas decorations!!!!!!! All we get is an electric menorah on some floors. It certainly does NOT look like a Jewish hospital this time of year. I would like to see someone speak up for the community about this matter. I'm sure it can be resolved in a nice way. May all the sick have a refuah sh'laima!!!

The Healthgrades rating system is based on Maimonides Hospital's own billing records. Maimonides is a real expert in billing and "gaming" the system.
The AMA has already published articles questioning the validity of ratings based on billing records created by the hospitals themselves. This is a "Con Game."
I just had a patient in the Maimonides, and he was treated like garbage. I moved him to another hospital, and--within one day--he was another person.
Maimoides runs a sloppy, expensive, negligent operation..If it weren't for the many good local doctors in Borough park who practice there, the place would be closed down for incopetence.

Doctors aren't required to take care of the uninsured. A person doesn't have to discuss finances in the ER unless the person is being admitted or the person is leaving. Thus, indirectly, the ER is providing free medical care for these people & they know this. Therefore they use the ER instead of a doctor or a clinic.

my father who has alzheimer's was brought in by Hatzalah on Shabbos suffering from an infection. the hospital went out of its way for us and helped us keep our father from being frightened and alone. Yes there were areas that need improvement but overall they were beyond excellent especially the nurses on Aron 5! don't knock it and you should never need it. also it is your attitude that can make a difference we were worried and tense but always polite even when they were not! we hope we made a kiddush Hashem and that we upheld all our parents taught us. Maybe that is also why we got such good care?

"with all the help of the community"? Let's be honest- what does the community do for the hospital? Bringing around gefilte fish and cake is very nice for the patients, but that doesn't do anything in terms of helping the hospital. Other hospitals over the bridge have people from the community help them out financially. Our community, to be honest among ourselves, doesn't help out financially. We only make demands and think that we should get some special treetment. Why? Because we live nearby? There are plenty of people in the community who can afford to help out financially and don't.

People in our community have large families bh and canno afford to give money towards the hospital. They have many obligations, like yeshivas and their married kids who need their help!!!!!! How much did you give???
