The man, 36-year-old Reshek Asraf of East Jerusalem, was arrested earlier this month after allegedly beating his wife ad was taken to the Shefet Police Station to await processing by the Israel Prison Service. In a statement released on May 16th, police said that while in his cell, he apparently broke a fluorescent light bulb and used the glass to slit his throat. He was found not long after, and was ruled dead at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

At the time of his death, Ashraf’s wife was living in a battered women’s shelter.

The story reemerged this week, after members of Asraf’s family came forward to say they suspect foul play.

Ch. Supt. Asi Aharoni, the spokesperson for the Jerusalem Police District, said that while police don’t suspect foul play, a judge has been appointed to investigate the incident, and that police are also probing how Asraf managed to kill himself, in order to prevent future cases.

Aharoni said that Asraf was not under any sort of suicide watch at the time.
