Brooklyn, NY - Hikind Fights To Keep Public Library Open On Sundays |
|
Dionne Mack Harvin, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Public Library, attributes the Sunday closures to “actual and proposed reductions in both City and State funding in Fiscal Year 2009 and Fiscal Year 2010.” In a letter to the Assemblyman, she estimates that the elimination of Sunday service will reduce the Library’s annual expenses by $800,000.
In his response to Ms. Harvin, Hikind stated, “I question the Brooklyn Public Library’s judgment in closing the library on Sundays in what are primarily Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods.” Hikind added that the library should close on Saturdays instead of Sundays to “ensure equal library access for all New Yorkers.”
The cessation of Sunday library service is part of what seems to be a growing trend of Sunday closures throughout Hikind’s district. Earlier this month, The Blythebourne Station Post Office was also slated to cease Sunday operations until Assemblyman Hikind got involved. In response to Hikind’s efforts and public outcry, The Blythebourne Station will now remain open on Sundays until further notice.
“Once upon a time, the customer was always right,” Hikind said. “Today, the customer is apparently just plain irrelevant.” Hikind continued, “No one disagrees that difficult choices have to be made in light of the current economic situation, but significant agency operating decisions need to be made in concert with the needs of the patrons.”
Hikind urges the community to contact Mr. Steven Schechter, Director of Government Relations for the Brooklyn Public Library at 718-230-2091 to voice additional opposition to the planned closures.

Perhaps we can connect this with a previous story about charedim wanting to go to college. Sunday is when there is the most time to go and read the books needed to get the skills one needs to succeed in the world. Closing the libraries on Sunday would again put Frum Yidden in another disadvantage of finding the information they need to help them with parnnasa.

DOV IS BUSY WITH ALL DIFFERENT PROBLEMS THAT CONCERN OUR COMMUNITY, BE IT A SMALL ISSUE LIKE THIS OR A BIG ONE LIKE CHILD MOLESTATION. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT YOU ARE JEALOUS OF HIS ACCOMPLISHEMENTS.

Actually it's very important for the girls who are off and for those who work all week.
It's good we have some who takes care of the important and annoying things that others just think are silly.
It's as important as the many other silly proposals that the goverment has enacted in the last couple of Bloomberg years.

Thanks Dov; It's good to see you at work ALL the time, not just before elections like the other guy.
Dov just got USPS in BP to stay open on Sundays, way to go.

...That's a stretch!... Or, a P'shetl! Anyone who's ambitious enough can seek out the information, on the other Five days. Of course, it could be seen as a personal action, affecting mostly orthodox Jews. But the enhancement of one's career, or the lack of it, doesn't turn on Sunday closures of the [local] Library!!!

A Jew does not belong in a kibrary. Men belong in bais medrash and women at home. Eichlers is open Sundays if you need a book.

IT'S DOV JOB TO FIX THE SMALL AND BIG THINGS IN THE COMMUNITY. JUST BECAUSE YOU DO NOT LIKE THE LIEBARY DOES NOT MEAN IT SHOULD BE CLOSED ON SUNDAY.

are there any stats ? how many vistors on saturday vs. sunday although the library serves a purpose , its fair to say that the overwhelming majority of bp residents are not active members in the library ( reasoning aside)
with the info on the internet much of the benefits of a library is impractical from basic medical advice to news..
the state has a real defict so what should they cut ?? judging by gov. patterson choice of cuts he is choosing wisely ( although some of thes cuts will hurt "unz")

Not at all working ours make it impossible to take out that book you need or return that book you took out on the longer Fridays.
Those who dont want to go should not go, but there are plenty Litvishe and American BP families who still enjoy the library and should be protected from these closers.
Let them save money in another Community, that's why we have an Assemblyman to fight for US not for the Governer or the Goverment he is there for US.

And so is the library for those who want to take out a good book to read without spending money.

Maybe if you went to the library more, you would all be "aloud" if not encouraged to write properly

Perhaps they can save money by withdrawing internet access instead. Why do kids need unsupervised access to smut?
