Rebecca Weisbard was competing in a Jump Off competition at the HITS competition facility in Saugerties when the fatal accident occurred.
Police said that Weissbard’s horse was jumping the second of ten hurdles in the competition when it accidentally hit one of the hurdle’s cross poles. Weissbard was thrown from the horse and was killed when the horse fell on top of her.
Paramedics from DIAZ Ambulance were called to the scene but were unable to revive the young woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Weissbard had been riding for most of her life and took home both an individual gold and a team silver medal from the 2013 Maccabiah games. She had won a competition at HITS earlier in the day before taking the fatal fall off a horse named Uncle Si, as reported by Newsday.
“Becca was a firecracker,” said her mother Lynne Weissbard. “Becca came into this world like fire and she left like fire. She didn’t do anything halfway.”
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced for Weissbard who lived in Manorville, Long Island.
All I have heard this week is bad news of young people. Enough already!
