Goshen, NY – Would be criminals in Orange County may have a tougher time eluding the authorities as a new program announced today by District Attorney David M. Hoovler would have private citizens registering their video surveillance cameras with law enforcement for possible use in investigating crimes.

Participation in the newly created Community Camera Partnership Program is voluntary and allows law enforcement to create a database of existing cameras on residential homes and businesses. That information will be stored in the Video Camera Law Enforcement Portal, a secure website accessible only to county law enforcement agencies. The portal would list only the locations of registered cameras, with no remote access available to any of the registered cameras.

Under the program, a police agency that suspects that a particular camera might have captured images of a crime under investigation would contact the owner to request permission to view the surveillance footage in person. Owners have the right to refuse any requests and images from registered cameras can only be viewed with the express consent of the camera owner.

“Evidence obtained on video security cameras have proven to be one of the best methods of apprehending criminals and convicting defendants who are caught in the act of committing a crime,” said Hoovler as the program was announced at an Orange County Chamber of Commerce breakfast this morning.

Hoovler said that the program was just the first step in a greater effort to prevent crime in Orange County.

“I have tasked my senior staff to continue developing intelligence-based approaches to the investigation and prosecution of crime so that we may assist our police officers and our citizens as they struggle to reduce crime in our communities.”

Orange County cameras owners can register for the program at www.ocdacams.com.
