Jerusalem - Officials in the defense establishment denied on Tuesday evening reports that they had recommended to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to suspend military operations for 48 hours and during that time to review a number of possible ceasefire solutions for the conflict in Gaza.

Earlier it was reported that the defense stablishment recommendeded that Israel use the suspension of operations to carefully study Hamas's intentions; whether the group was planning to escalate the violence by renewing attacks inside the country or whether it would opt to stop its rocket attacks against the South altogether.

It was possible that Operation Cast Lead, the massive bombardment since Saturday of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, had already made clear to Hamas that the "rules of the game" had changed and that Israel will no longer tolerate rocket fire against its civilians.

A commentator on Israel's Channel 10 said Defense Minister Ehud Barak and IDF Chief of General Staff Gabi Ashkenazi both supported the initiative to suspend action for 48 hours.

The IDF spokesperson denied recommending a temporary ceasefire.

Doesn't make any sense any lay person can gather that. They have to be wiped out, or it will just continue again. Or they will cease fire long enough to come back stronger. Any truces, is just a farce on hamas' part.

Because you aren't there to lead them.

Get out of you armchair, sell your house in Monsey and move to eretz yisroel where you can see daily the effects of going in either direction.

Until then, please spare the rest of us the urge to laugh at your comments.

We used to have a saying - What is a Zionist? A Jew from England who raises money from Jews in America to send Jews from Poland to live in Palestine.

Israel should not have a cease fire for even a small period of time. They should take the initiative and continue their actions to DESTROY Hamas and anyone that stands in their way. They should be strong and not back down. BE STRONG.

Yeah, send in the ground troops. Your kid isn't there with the Hesder boys anyway. So who cares how many Israelis get killed following your advise.

Why stop? Oil is low now and inventories are high. Abbas and Mubarek don't want to deal with Hamas either. The incoming EU president, granted it's symbolic, is not blasting Israel. Bush and Condi aren't. Lord Obama is silent playing golf in Hawaii. The stock market would love to put this to a rest.

I read certain Rabbinic authorities in Israel gave the green light for attacking Hamas if they are surrounded among civilians.

Finish the job. The Sharon administration created this mess by leaving Gaza. Olmert embarrassed Israel with his follies in Lebanon. Yad Kasheh and get it over with.

Which makes every "Zionist" supporter of Isreal in America a maven on what the IDF should do to protect the country.

(BTW, I'm the guy who keeps knocking the Americans who post opinions about what you in EY should be doing.)

This is only propaganda by hamas supporters to coax Israel into a false ceasfire. It is clearly muslim doctrine to agree to all treaties until the time when the enemy can be defeated

Do they want the bombardment to cease? Of course Not, they are not done showing the media how mean the Israelis are. When they have had enough they can surrender. UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER, Must include Shallit. Until then no talk is necessary or desirable.

the Koran tells them to enter into treaties with the infidels, and then break them when the time is right.

The Hamas terrorists are actually more honest in their stated intentions than Abbas/PLO?Fatah- they say their goal is no recgonition/no peace, and they want us dead, and all of our land., So much for intentions. As to Abbas, he wants the same thing, but pretends peace, acts dignified, meets with world leaders, etc. The Palestinians of Hamas, the PA, and Hezballah- all the same-Kill them!

Who said they had to listen? It's easy to blame someone else instead of these Israeli gov. cowards taking the blame themselves. Soon you'll tell me that Sharon (Benedict Arnold) made Gaza Judenrein because of Bush. All Bush did was continue the peace process of Clinton which was started by the leftists Peres and then followed by Rabin. Why don't you have hakoras hatov to President Bush for being one of the few world leaders to stand up to Muslim terroism the last 8 years.

I totally agree on the basis of military logic. What's more, it's not fair to the IDF soldiers, the citizens of Israel and all of us Jews worldwide to gear up to such an emotional pitch and then allow the same-old passivity and negligence to take hold again. We must finish this job while the momentum is high. You just can't toy with the morale of these dedicated soldiers!! That having been said, what we really need to pray for is Moshiach Now!!!

Dec 31, 2008 at 01:22 AM murray Says:

We must, as counter-intuitive as it seems allow for the cease fire, because the terrorists cannot stop firing their missiles into Israel while under constant bombardment. They need some "breathing room", and a respite in order to stop.
I don't understand it, but the media is explaining it this way., In other words we demand they stop, but won't physically let them take their finger off the launch button, while bombing them. Someone explain how this works. All I can come up with (and i don't believe it) is that bombs falling on their heads means that they can't think straight, and the activity is so feverish that they are incapable of rational thought processes (can't hear themselves think) . Let them have some moments of silence, and they will think it out logically, and come to the rational conclusion to stop launching into Israel. Pure Nonsense- but this is whats coming out of the "Quartet", the UN, and especially Ireland, who has called for complete disengagement with Israel on all levels.
