Shira Muchnik, an administrator at the Gan Camarillo Preschool, says she noticed a row of swastikas painted on the sidewalk in front of the school along with the words “white power” and notified authorities.

It was the third time this year the school area has been defaced with Nazi symbol. As with the first two incidents, Muchnik said, detectives were immediately notified of the vandalism.

Sheriff’s officials say they have classified the incident as a hate crime.

Cyndi Silverman, a staff member of the Anti-Defamation League in Santa Barbara, said there have been numerous hate crimes against Jews nationwide over the past few days. Silverman said investigators are exploring whether they might be related to Israeli air strikes against Hamas militants in Gaza.

Sheriff’s officials say Camarillo has the highest number of hate crimes among areas patrolled by their department. More than 15 such incidents have been reported in Camarillo since January 2007.
