That’s because starting today, they’ll have to pay more to travel on most sections of the New York Thruway.

Many drivers will be digging for more change with the controversial change in Thruway tolls.
Tolls will increase by five percent. This is the second toll hike of the year; they were also raised by five percent this past summer.
The Thruway authority says the toll hike is necessary to make improvements to the highway system.

When the NYS Thruway opened in the 1950’s, the tolls were supposed to be temporary. They were supposed to pay for the construction. Fast forward 50+ years later, and we have a huge agency that can issue a lot of municipal bond debt. Oh yeah, the tolls are still there. Government almost never gets rid of something they confiscate.

I am not against taxes for road maint. and snow removal. The Thruway does a great job of snow removal. But this agency also has a lot of legacy costs with the bloated benefits many of us do not have working for ourselves or for our employers.

The same goes with the NY Meter on street parking. It all began to support the homeless and now it became to suck the wealthy.

Its still a state sponsored group. Instead of cutting back like the rest of America, the Thruway authority along with most of NY government has chosen to keep the tax and spend going. And to the guy that wants us to know the basics, your a government worker or a non productive member of society who seems to be able to justify all taxes, fees, etc as long as they dont come out of your pocket.

I will give you the basics. I happily do a job by myself, with a perfect safety record, that it would take at least 3 workers and as many vehicles from any government agency of any level. Enough said.
