Jerusalem - NYC Mayor Bloomberg, accompanied by Congressman Gary Ackerman, a Democrat from New York, visited today the southern Israeli towns of Ashkelon and Sderot, both of which have been targeted by Hamas rockets over the past several weeks, and met with New Yorkers who had immigrated.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Bloomberg said he fully understood Israel's actions. "You should rest assured, if anyone in New York was being threatened, my instruction to the NYPD (New York police) would be to use all the resources at their disposal to protect civilians," Bloomberg said.

"I think as a New Yorker, we've been attacked twice by al-Qaida itself," said the mayor, who is Jewish. "We've seen enormous devastation and courage and after that you sort of feel you have a bond, if you will, for those who live in a dangerous world and are subject to someone trying to kill them."

Bloomberg blamed the current situation entirely on the Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip and began launching rockets against Israeli towns in the south after its six-month truce with Israel lapsed last month.

"All Hamas has to do is stop sending rockets over to kill people and agree on the accords that were negotiated earlier and come to an agreement that is verifiable, durable and effective to stop people from being killed," he added.

During the visit to the embattled town of Sderot, Bloomberg and his party briefly had to be hustled to a bomb shelter when a missile warning went off.

This is the first piece of trutheful video footage out of CNN since this war started! I live in NYC and don't like Bloomberg for all his taxes, but in this situation he REALLY put his money where his mouth is, went out there, and said it as it is. I am proud to have him as Mayor, just for that.

Finally someone tells CNN the way it is.
Watched CNN last night and you could think that Israel had nothing to do with their time and just went on a killing spree.

Mayor just for these words I would vote for you as President of the United States.

They only began launching rockets against Israel last month? The rocket and mortar attacks never stopped - maybe the frequency decreased slightly.

I am truly impressed. The Mayor really said it like it is. Hamas is continuously bothering and nudging and teasing the Israelis, kept sending rockets for over 2 years. How much can they take???

Yes, he spoke with accuracy and passion. I am very pleased. CNN can't help showing those rocket attacks, can they. Great job, Mayor Bloomberg. You just went up several notches in my estimation.

blumberg SPECIFICALLY says that the rockets did NOT stop during that time, just that they got much worse lately. He says that israel was getting bombed every day with a few rockets, and that lately it jumped to hundreds a day.

I very very much commend Blumberg for saying it straight. Now if only he was good on taxes.. :-/

Not a Great mayor!, Not even a good mayor................But I do think he would make an Excellent choice for Pres. of the USA. I mean this in all sincerity. Poor guy gets bogged down in silly little taxes (like plastic bag tax, etc.) He would be better at the Big issues facing the country.

I wasn't quoting Bloomberg; rather, my quote was taken directly from the above article. I also commend Bloomberg for speaking the truth.

That's exactly what he intended, besides that he never had and never will have anything significate with the Jewish community. Never sponsered any programs or gave money to Jewish organizations. He is a politician and just in case you missed it Caroline Kennedy also supports Israel, oh I forgot to add she wants to be NY senator.

Many years, how many? I believe the answer is about 7 or since he took office.
