Richmond Hill, NY - Long Island's first baby of 2009 arrived at four seconds after midnight yesterday at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, a 7-pound, 9-ounce boy born to a veteran mom - a woman who has given birth five times before.

Leah Richter, 33, of Richmond Hill said she was a week overdue and, having been in that situation before, was not anticipating the baby's arrival for a few more days. So when he made his appearance just after the stroke of 12, "it was a big surprise."

Dr. Jonathan Herman, the obstetrician-gynecologist who delivered the baby

He said he told the nurse, Suwalee Tom, " 'You're the official timekeeper. What's the time of birth?' And she said, 'Four seconds after midnight.' "

All of Richter's children have been born at LIJ.

Richter's husband, Yaakov, is a rabbi and a teacher. Leah Richter works part-time as an ultrasound technician at Richmond Hill Radiology.

She said yesterday that this birth was no less exciting than the previous five.

"The whole floor" at the hospital was excited, she said. "All the nurses and the doctors came in. When they brought the baby in this morning, they said, 'Here's the New Year's baby.' "

lots of nachas but this is not the most yiddishe thing for the bloggers to be excited about. Are we celebrating yushkeh or something jewish here? I would be more impressed with the first born on ROSH HASHONAH!

Lots of nachas to the parents and mishpacha.

Anonymous & Murray, you miss the point.

The readership of Newsday sees that a frum Jewish woman and her husband (A) are behaving responsibly and respectably; and (B) have just cranked out their 6th child.

That's SIX frum Jewish children!

Antisemites and chiloniim need to see that there are more frum yidden coming through the pipeline! They need to be reminded that they cannot eradicate us from the world.

It IS a big deal!!!

I, for one, would be quite elated to see Number 7 from Rabbi & Rebbitzin Richter.

Mazel Tov!!

I was not aware that chillonim were looking to eradicate us. The vast majority of them would be very happy to just be left alone.

All you grinches: You know how the secular world makes fuss over the first New Year's baby. The fact that it's a frum baby of all the babies born on that day is a little exciting! Lots of Nachas a Mazel Tov from a fellow mother of six.

I have never seen anything this demeaning or condescending on this site before, as your comments. "that frum yidden are acting responsible and respectful" How else should they act? What is this behavior-the 'exception", special 'Brownie " points for acting well, please explain yourself, is the norm for frum new parents to hoop and holler, smoke cigarettes, booze it up?
