New York - The Senate leadership deal is officially done, and Queens Democrat Malcolm Smith has finally landed the 32 votes he needs to be majority leader of the Senate tomorrow, putting the chamber back into Democratic hands for the first time in 43 years.

Members of the Senate Democratic conference held a closed-door meeting to discuss leadership and other matters.    Toward the end of of the meeting, they were joined by the three New York City Democrats who had threatened to join forces with outgoing Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County.

Conference members (except for one, Sen. Hiram Monserrate) emerged a few minutes later, with Smith confirming that he had 32 votes in support of his leadership.

Smith confirmed the details of the deal between himself and the three.

In short:

- Kruger, who ducked out without speaking to reporters, will chair the Finance Committee ($34,000), which Smith said does have a budget of between $5 million and $6 million. Sen. Liz Krueger will be vice chair of that committee (that's a new position, and so has no existing lu-lu; she's also chair of Select Committee on Budget Reform).

- Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. will chair the Aging Committe ($12,500), and also will head a new Latino Task Force.

- Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. will chair the Housing Committee ($12,500) and will also serve as vice chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, the most powerful committee in the Senate, (Smith is the chairman) and president of the Senate for Urban Policy.

Their is a big difference between the democrats and republicans, the republicans are in the opinion that America is a Christian country, but not the democrats, the democrats are at least in the opinion that the society have the obligation that everyone should be taken care of. So that's good news.

Awesome! more tax and spend liberals! Yeeha! Let's tax more businesses out of NY. Until Albany lets go of 2/3 of the workers up there, this state is doomed. They blew all of the money they took in from Wall Street and the mortgage transfer taxes.

I think moving companies will do really well packing up people to more tax friendly states

May they all work together to solve New York State's serious fiscal problems.

A side note: Several years ago I heard Sen. Diaz speak before a Jewish event in a part of the Bronx that is not in his district. Sen. Diaz gave a rousing pro-Israel speech that except for the Spanish accent could have been given by the most pro-Israel Zionist. This despite the fact that Sen. Diaz has very few Jews in his district. Thank you for your support, Sen. Diaz!

One cannot seriously argue that the Republicans in the New York Senate favor low taxes or less spending. They have stayed in power for decades largely because of their ability to deliver large amounts of pork to their districts, along with quite creative drawing of district lines.

And it should be pointed out that the frum community has benefited greatly from many of these government programs. You are quite irresponsible if you really think that 2/3 of government employees are unneeded.
