New York - NYPD: Terror Threat Text Alert A Terrible Hoax |
|

The threat, which has popped up on forwarded e-mails and blog posts [VIN News did not report this threat as we felt that the email circulating had no credibility, although dozens of our readers asked us to cover it.] across the world, warns of an attack in New York today. It says the warning originated with a Muslim cab driver who told a Jewish woman he picked up of a Jan. 7 plot.
"There is no terror plot or threat connected to the rumor that is circulating in New York and in other cities abroad," said Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne.
"There are several variations on the rumor, but it is just that, the latest urban myth."
City Hall and the NYPD were alerted to the viral message days ago, officials said.
Synagogues across the city have added extra security because of the conflict in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the Web site of the Bay Ridge Jewish Center in Brooklyn was hacked by a man calling himself "EL_MuHAMMeD FOR PALESTINE."
Pictures of hooded men launching missiles appeared on the center's site.

The next text "going around" is about Sunday, 1/11/09 being the opposite of 9/11/01. My relatives in Bnei Brak called yesterday to voice their concern! They are sitting huddles up with children and grandchildren from Ashdod, and just went through the trauma of last week's rockets, and they are worried about US!
We are not "safe" anywhere, this is golus. We need a miracle! A Yeshua!

The story is true, my daughter's co-workers friend verified it with her neighbor, to whom it happened to. I just hope this cab driver was properly interrogated and either punished for causing a false uproar, or the matter is properly looked into.

Um, yes: fabricated, no cab driver, no woman, no nothin'.
A similar hoax was perpetrated around the 9/11 time frame.

The more likely version of this story, is that yes, she gave him a tip, but a very measly tip. So, to get back at this Jewish woman, he scared the heck out of her by telling her that there was an immanent threat in NYC.
OK before anyone flames me, I'd like to point out, I'M KIDDING.

I heard it last week too but knew it was a hoax - its a story thats goes around in various formats - see snopes. The people who I heard it from said "But I heard it from a reliable source" - but they all got it originally from another "reliable source" and the got it from ... until no one ACTUALLY checked it out (come to think of it, sounds lit the Madoff scheme - everyone trusting each other, but no one checks it out).
To #6 - I dont believe any story thats 5 degrees of separation. Do YOU know your daughters, friends, coworkers neighbour? Did you check it out yourself?
To #10 - that sounds a more credible story!
BTW, no arab / muslim attack had ever come with a warning before, other wars/ attacks, but never from muslim terrorists.

the time spent forwarding, reading, txting and othewise being consumed by this would have been better spent visiting an elderly neighbor in your building, dropping off a container of soup at a new mother, or even offering to do some errands for someone who could use the help.

If it is the opposite of 9/11 then it means that we bomb them into the stone ages.

"The story is true"
1) You
2) Your daughter
3) Co-worker
4) Friend of co-worker
5) Neighbor of friend
And you still think the story is true? Are you serious?

Crying wolf
This may be the beginning of many more hoaxes to come. When people see how easy it is to scare people le with this they may go ahead and do it more often. This will also help the terrorist finally do have a threat people may not listen because of all the fake ones that came before (as the story of the boy who cried wolf.).
The point of terrorism in most cases is not to inflict the most damage but to inflict the most fear. Just the idea that people don’t know when a real one or a fake threat is coming would be enough to scare people away. Special thanks to VIN news for not publicizing the hoax with a discerning eye to legitimate new and fake news

Yeah, same thing happened here. My mother's employer's son'n rebbe's sister in law's great aun'ts shaitel macher heard about it from her husband's mechanic's podiatrist's younger sister's accountant's secratery's cousin's dry-cleaner's UPS delivery guy in Lakewood who read about it on a secret web-site for UPS drivers, cab drivers, Meals on Wheel's drivers and other's with top security clearance.

Query whether anybody's texting skills are so rudimentary as to permit any of those tasks to be performed in the same amount of time.

even news sources pick up hoaxes as "facts", too. It happens all the time. Starting such a rumer is easy, send it to 3 people and they'll send it on, etc. There is no way to see who started it, so there's no reason to even try.
By the way, if you delete the c:\windows folder on your pc, it will run 6.7 times faster, that was posted on cnn and nbc.

It could be that this Mrs. Brander really did tip the taxi driver well, and he really did give her this 'tip' back. All the sources could be reliable, except the taxi driver is the one that started the rumor.

since i have recently experinced and realized that sending messages without verification is a real problem in our community, there should be a lesson taken from this story that is:
1) never send a mssg whitout verifieing it first,
2) let the experts decide if its credible or not, dont judge for yourself,
3) if we dont do the 2 above we are playing wolf wolf, which can have serious consequences,
i would suggest and it whould be a good idea to notify the people who started this mssg and ask them to make a chain mssg with this 3 points, in the same way thay did a chain with the threat, so all the people who needs to learn this (beacuse they forward the mssg) will learn this,
it whould be a favor for yourself and for others if you know whom to notify and do it, thanks.
