There have been some antisemitic incidents with the Chabad House victimized recently, obviously connected with fighting in the South. It is probable that the stepped up security is somehow connected to the fuighting in Gaza.

I understand and applaud sending shiluchim to cities where Jews live, for the reason of showing and teaching the locals a religious Jewish way of life. But why put shiluchim in harm’s way in places which are no more than holiday resorts where Jews should not be there anyway .

Shlichim should only go to places that have a well established cheder for their kids, a Daf Yomi for themselves, and a sheitel macher for their wives. It is terrible to send a young couple to a place that doesn't even have one cholev yisroel pizza shop.
There are so many places that they can go to that have all these things (e.g. Lakewood), there is no reason to deprive them of a normal life and make them suffer in a deep golus.
Aren't there non-religious jews in brooklyn or manhatten or new jersey or miami?!
Be mekarev those yidden and enjoy eating out tonight in a choice of eateries of various nationalities under the best hechsherim money can buy.
Is it a mitzvah to make life hard on yourself?!

Having a relative that is a Shliach in a holiday resort I understand why they are there. In this particular place large numbers of Israelis come on vacation, and it is an opportunity to try to bring more Yiddishkeit into their lives, as well as helping Jews in many different ways.
I don't think that you can make a statement that "Jews should not be there anyway", because most of these people are not from a religious background. They are going there because they want to have a good time and because it is inexpensive.

Shlichus is: we go to a place were there are jews which dont have somebody taking care of theyr judaism. That includes, but not limited to: combating intermarriage, providing jewish education for all ages, religious services etc.
Thats basically what theyre there for, the rest is just part of the picture...

the whole point of shluchim, is that they go to places far out, even if it means giving up the comforts of home. And trust me, there are plenty of shluchim in new york, miami, and all the big cities which do have the comforts

Excellent point. It's so sad that very few people living their cushy HUD supported lives, driving two leased japanese cars will ever have the common sense to understand your point.

Tell that garbage to my kids who are on Shlichus in a "tourist" town in a foreign country. No protection, no nothing. Yes, we're very worried, but...

You're entitled to your own misinformed opinion. However, for Shluchim to ONLY live in frum, built up areas, where everything they could possibly need is right around the corner, is a complete oxy-moron to what Shlichus is.
The point is not to try to make life as hard as possible, the point is to go to places where there are Jews, (and there are Jews all over) and create a dwelling place for Hashem over there, with the Jews that are there, and with the supplies that are there, and be a light unto the nations over there.
Shlichus can also be like you say, it can be living in a frum community, it can be creating a dwelling place for Hashem within a built up community - working with youth e.t.c. - That's inreach.
Each Shliach decides for himself what he can do best.
So sit back, relax, don't worry there are other people who care about EVERY SINGLE JEW, even if you haven't discovered it in yourself just as of yet.

With that same logic you should only send soldiers to nice places like the 50 states, Gd forbid to iraq. The shluchim are the rebbes army. Where there are jews chabad will be there. That is why there are so many baaleo teshuva.

thats EXACTLY what shluchim ARE NOT! Shluchhim's job is not to entertain themselves by mekareving yidden, The point is to go on shlichus DAVKA because there might be even one yid in a small town in yehoopitzville who's spark needs to be reunited.
also, there ARE PLENTY of shluchim in the tri- state area. There are even shluchim in Boro Park!!
And, yes if that's how you view it, then its not a mitzvah, but those that go one shlichus DO NOT view it that way, and are happy just to be there because every moment they are there, they are making a difference!

Jan 12, 2009 at 01:47 PM Shemesh Bigiv'on Dom V'yareach B'emmek Says:
The Chabbad House in Cyprus is run by Rav Raskin and his wife, and some sheirut leumi girls and guys from Israel. Having spent a considerable amount of time with them I can conclude that they are there for avodat kodesh and mesirut nefesh. Not to be in an area around a "kosher pizza shop". MIght I remind you that no one forced these people with a gun to be shlichim there. Rather is was out of their own kedusha that they decided to go help other people. The point is that all of the shlichim go to these countries not to have the comfort of the gashmi world, but to help save the neshamos of thousands of Chiloni (non-religious) jews who have gone to "find themselves" after the army.
This time period is a critical moment in these Israelis' lives and they are most open minded and impressionable in those foreign countries. So Chabbad shlichim risk their own lives, and compromise their own comfort to save our brethren.
One last thing: if Ribono Shel Olam gave us a bchira chofshit (freedom of choice), then who in the hell are you to say what people should or should not do? G-d did not anoint you as His policeman so take a break from your authority trip and count to ten before you openly voice your opinion: "sof ma'aseh b'machshava t'chila"!

There was an established kehilla in Lakewood long before the yeshiva was started. There were shuls, a mikveh, a kosher butcher, etc.
Rav Aaron Kotler ZTK"L bedavka wanted a town not too close to NYC that had the infrastructure of a kehilla.

Indeed, for some people misurus nefesh is...eating pizza without toppings; have an icecream without sprinkles. In Lakewood, not going to the sheitel macher every other week is the ultimate misurus nefesh.
In chabad, it seems they are prepared to give up their gashmiyus and ruchniyus. The physical hardships and the spiritual ones. That is the mindset of their shlichim.
