Jerusalem – Report: Ivanka Trump Gets Pass To Travel On Shabbat For Inauguration

Ivanka Trump, daughter of U.S. President Elect Donald Trump walks through the lobby with her husband Jared Kushner at Trump Tower in New York, U.S. November 18, 2016. REUTERS/Mike SegarWashington – Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner have received rabbinic permission to travel by car on Friday evening following the inauguration of her father, Donald Trump, as the next president of the United States, according to a Kol Barama radio interview with Mark Zell, the chair of the Republican party in Israel.

Traditionally, traveling in a car on Friday evening or Saturday is a violation of the Jewish Sabbath. Jared Kushner is Jewish, and Ivanka converted to Judaism. In a November Jerusalem Post piece, Shira Schmid noted that Ivanka “took on observance of Shabbat, holidays and kashrut, and adopted the Hebrew name Yael.”

“We observe the Sabbath. From Friday to Saturday we don’t do anything but hang out with one another. We don’t make phone calls,” Ivanka told Vogue in March 2015.

Ivanka praised the way that Shabbat provides a “blueprint for family connectivity,” in that it protects time for her to spend with her family, including her eldest child, Arabella. “It’s an amazing thing when you’re so connected, to really sign off,” said Ivanka. “And for Arabella to know that she has me, undivided, one day a week? We don’t do anything except play with each other, hang out with one another, go on walks together. Pure family!”

According to Zell, the special permission to travel by car was granted in order to protect the couple’s safety. Life-saving measures, such as the work of surgeons or soldiers, are permitted on Shabbat under the rule of pikuach nefesh, or protection of life, which overrides other commandments in the Torah.

The MO do what the MO do. They have very loose definitions of all things halocha. Be’H, the Luby Shliach there will have a positive hashba’a on them.

That being said, if they have a goy opening and closing doors etc., it’s not as bad.

As usual, AP gets the story wrong: they received permission to be driven. They will not be driving themselves. Additionally, now every Tom, Dick, and Harry with an assembly-line semicha will comment with their opinion as to why it’s right or wrong. Please refrain from comments that will lead to either motzei Shem Ra, avak lashon harah, or actual lashon harah. And please refrain from questioning Ms. Kushner’s geirus. Whether you think you are right or not, everything you type will be seen across the globe by all sorts of people.

Sound like rubbish to me. If she wants to break Shabbos that’s fine, she can say she is still working towards it. But to say she’s modern orthodox and he doesn’t wear a yarmulka or tzitzis etc is dodgy. It’s like saying I’m a vegetarian but only at night.

Is it pikuach nefesh if they stay home and don’t go to the inaugural party on Friday night? What kind of heter is there to drive on Shabbos to an OPTIONAL party?!

There’s no issur in sitting in a moving car on shabbos. And the secret service will be opening the doors that make the lights go on.

Pikuach Nefesh? They don’t HAVE to travel anywhere after the inauguration., Wherever Dad’s party is being held, I’m sure there is a room they can get. This doesn’t make sense.

Oh…. I am a huge Trump supporter, and I am thrilled he won. Just saying.

This is disgusting. They don’t have to take part in any inauguration events – neither of them was elected – and whatever ‘rabbi’ gave them a heter should be ashamed of himself!

Theyre yiddn and that should take precedence over all and she cldve proudly walked with their millions of body guards and make a huge kidush hashem. What a chaval. This psak is very poorly interpreted hopefully. Its mechalel shabos בפרהסיא. A chilil hashem.

Reb Yid: Sorry, travel on Saturday for religious reasons.
Boss: I’ll send an Uber car for you. Be ready at 9:00 a.m. Rebitzen Kushner said it is allowed.

Unlike a dr who can travel for a specific need, what is the actual חיוב to attend in the first place to warrant חילול שבת and moreover, why can’t they sleep over at White House(or some other facility).

Your all piskim? The work that lies ahead for both of them have a REAL impact on klal Yisrael , doesn’t mean they can eat pig, but they should certainly be at the inauguration and most certainly need protection and not walk on the street so get off your high horse and just be thankful for everything hashem gives you.

Look at the bright side they asked a Rabbi like we do and they got an answer, so now you don’t like what the Rabbi said go talk to him maybe he made a mistake, but she is not doing anything wrong they are just following the Ruv passak.

Now also put yourself in there shoes and walk with them first, and then answer, if your father is becoming president of the United States what will you do. (No need to answer as that your father is not becoming president)

And there is a big chance that this article is not the whole picture that’s going on, so what’s the point of bashing them.

No one on this chat realizes what a great danger we are in at the current moment. To me Jared and ivanka are playing the role of Ester Hamalka and we as frum jews must be very careful to be fully behind them.

History is replete with examples of dictatorial and brutal leaders who were adulated in their day by their citizens, for accomplishments that had nothing to do with their historical legacy of horror. Thus, the danger of cherry picking a leader’s “good points.”

This is from a contemporary Der Spiegel article analyzing Hitler’s appeal in the 1930s:

Hitler enjoyed widespread support in Germany. The claim that the change in Germany’s fortunes had been achieved single-handedly was, of course, absurd. Fascinating, nevertheless, in this litany of what most ordinary Germans at the time could only have seen as astonishing personal successes of the Führer, is that they represented national “attainments” rather than reflecting central tenets of Hitler’s own Weltanschauung.

There was not a word in this passage of the pathological obsession with “removing” the Jews, or of the need for war to acquire living space.

Restoration of order, rebuilding the economy, removal of the scourge of unemployment, demolition of the restrictions of the hated Versailles Treaty, and the establishment of national unity all had wide popular resonance, ranging far beyond die-hard Nazis, appealing in fact in different ways to practically every sector of society. Opinion surveys long after the end of the Second World War show that many people, even then, continued to associate these “achievements” positively with Hitler.

Obviously, Trump is no Hitler…but nonetheless, one ignores the totality that is Trump at his own risk. And no one can say they weren’t warned.

Please do not question the validity of her geirus. It is one of the worst things a Jew can do with his mouth or keyboard. She was NOT converted by R’ Lookstein, but by the RCA’s standard program under the Beis Din of America.

We may certainly express our disapproval of how she dresses, but unlike many other “frum” Jews in the news, she’ll never be wearing handcuffs.

To #30 Ivanka never dresses modestly — always sleeveless! Scoopneck! She should know better — sorry about the spelling.. I hope she dresses better for the inauguration and she does not have to go to these balls. She can stay in a hotel!

The main issue of driving a car is the melacha of havarah (making a fire) when engine starts and consumes gas. The purpose of the car is transportation (not heating or cooking). Hence, it is a melacha she’aina tzricha l’gufa – one does not “need” the melacha, it is a by-product of the action required. Although it is a “psik raisha” (unavoidable outcome), however, it is “lo nicha lay” (the outcome is undesired) since not only does the driver not benefit from the burning of gas, it actually isto the detriment as it causes a loss of money. In such a case, the undesired melacha would be muttar.

Other potential issues of driving a car fall into “davar she’aino miskaven” – one has no intention to do that melacha. Opening the door which causes light to go on is no different than walking across a grass field which causes some grass to be torn from ground (“harvesting”). This is the unintentional outcome of walking or opening a door.

Further, many d’rabbonon issues (such as amira l’akum – asking a non-Jew to do a melacha) are permitted for “l’tzorech harabbim” (-communal needs), or “l’tzorech mitzva” (-for sake of mitzva), or “l’tzorech choleh” (-the needds of an ill person). continued

We live in an ill society, Medinas Yisroel is mortal danger, America needs a strong leader that will stand up for Yaakov against the Esav and Yishmael. We are in atchaltah d’geulah and Hashem has sent us a “king” to rule over the most powerful country in the world. There is no greater mitzva and tzorech harabim as to support this leader. May we TRUMP over our enemies and usher in the full redemption.
