The swastikas were painted on the walls of the Hasidic Lelov synagogue in Jerusalem’s Nachalot neighborhood, as well as on the outside walls of nearby apartment buildings. The vandal or vandals also attempted to set fire to religious books in the synagogue, according to police.

A 38-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the vandalism, which was discovered Wednesday morning.

Swastika attacks on synagogues in Israel reportedly are rare.
