The trio of earthquakes that surprised New Jersey over the past month has seismologists wondering what’s next – and they say it doesn’t look good.

They call the geological fault lines crisscrossing Manhattan a perfect storm for a temblor that could topple older buildings, cause billions of dollars in damages and kill people citywide.

New York has survived at least three quakes measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, but two of them hit back in the 1700s and the other centered on Coney Island in 1884, toppling chimneys.

The city should expect a jolt like that last one every 100 years, the experts warn – which means we’re overdue. Jersey’s recent baby quakes, which caused no damage and failed to rise above 3.0 in magnitude, may have been warning shots, they say.

A 6.0-magnitude quake could cause as much as $200 billion in damages, according to a 2003 study by the New York City Area Consortium for Earthquake Loss Mitigation.

Schools should be practicing having earth quake drills, just like they practice having fire drills. I bet you they don’t even know what a earthquake drill is. FYI go under a door post or a hard surface such as a desk in order to protect your head from any falling objects. If schools won’t practice than parents make sure to educate your children and lets not forget to love our children every single second that we are all alive!!

There’s a control tower in heaven, Hashem controls exactly when and where and whether an earthquake should hit.
No expert can say when it’s “overdue”..

Maybe it will come with bloomberg’s global warming?! Seriously the “possibility” of an earthquake (i’ve been in a few 5+ as well as a 7.0 and they are NOT fun!) is higher than the man made global warming hoax.

For those paranoid among us New Yorkers who never experienced a real earthquake, here’s some earthquake tips from a native of California, the Land of Earthquakes (this is actually what they taught us in school):
    1. Do not run outside. Stay indoors.
    2. Get under a table or desk.
    3. Bring your knees to your chest.
    4. Put your hands behind your head.
    5. Cover your ears with your forearms.
    6. Bring your elbows as close together in front your face to protect your eyes.
    7. If you can’t get under a desk or table, stand in a doorway; if that’s not possible, stay away from bookcases and other tall furniture pieces.
    8. When it stops shaking, stay away from bookcases, which may tip over. Also, open china closets and cabinets very carefully so that nothing suddenly falls out on you.
    9. Do not use the phone unless someone is injured–the system will be slowed down and emergency services will need it first, so don’t clog it up.

Oh no, on top of the faltering economy NY will need some more stimulus money—Hashem should help.

its become really annoying that all people read in the news is doom and gloom.
this is why things are getting worse instead of better.
if the news would predict something positive, then people would become optimistic.

Earth quakes are unpredictable period. All this talk is nonsense. Its not like the weather, so far there is no system in place to know when and where a earthquake will hit. So stop worrying for nothing.

When all those tall buildings fall down on your head (chas v’sholom) then you’ll ask yourself: “Why didn’t we prepare for this?” You say nothing when building inspectors take bribes to ‘look the other way’ so that you have unsafe buildings; you say nothing when food inspectors take bribes to ‘look the other way” even though the food could be contaminated; etc. etc. Everyone gets what he deserves!! It’s all Min Hashomayim.

why would anyone post that there Chas V’Sholom might be an earthquake….we don’t have to believe everything we hear and see….doesnt anyone remember that its HaKodesh Baruch Hu who runs the world, not some meshugah so called ”experts”…..we have to keep davening and learning…..please people, don’t believe this nerushkeit….do you all believe the weathermen every day…..just think how many times they were right and wrong…..they are practically wrong three quarters of the time….just remember, who the real Chacham in this is….HaKodesh Baruch Hu of course….

Hecht tries to give sane advice above, but it sounds like written for urban sprawl, not NYC tight and tall bldgs.

If a big one starts shaking, do as the old adage – put your head between your knees and (try to) kiss your *** goodbye.
