The event, known as Diner en Blanc, French for Dinner in White, is an annual foodie tradition.

Organizers say there were 45,000 people on the waiting list for Tuesday’s dinner. Tickets started at $42.

Ticket holders were told to show up at one of several designated spots, where the secret venue was disclosed.

When the dinner began just before sunset, guests were asked to wave their white napkins in the air.

Organizer Sandy Safi says the dinner is “a unique night out in the city.”

The event began in Paris 29 years ago and is now in 79 cities in 28 countries.

Weird. People with money wanting to do silly things to feel better about their lives. Am I right in assessing this as an act of meaningless affiliation (let’s get together and parallel play with strangers interested in coughing up money to eat together wearing uniforms)? What potential is there in this for charity fund-raising events, or would that be too exploitative of people’s weaknesses?

So you bring your own food & wine & tables & chairs; and tickets start at only $42? What am I missing here??? Why did 45,000 people spend money to eat their own food????

What shtus. If they tried this in Boro Park, nobody would show up, much less 45,000 on the waiting list.
