New York - It took 24 years, but PepsiCo now has its own version of New Coke.

The PepsiCo Americas Beverages division of PepsiCo is bowing to public demand and scrapping the changes made to a flagship product, Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice. Redesigned packaging that was introduced in early January is being discontinued, executives plan to announce on Monday, and the previous version will be brought back in the next month.

Also returning will be the longtime Tropicana brand symbol, an orange from which a straw protrudes. The symbol, meant to evoke fresh taste, had been supplanted on the new packages by a glass of orange juice.

The about-face comes after consumers complained about the makeover in letters, e-mail messages and telephone calls and clamored for a return of the original look.

Some of those commenting described the new packaging as “ugly” or “stupid,” and resembling “a generic bargain brand” or a “store brand.”

“Do any of these package-design people actually shop for orange juice?” the writer of one e-mail message asked rhetorically. “Because I do, and the new cartons stink.”

Others described the redesign as making it more difficult to distinguish among the varieties of Tropicana or differentiate Tropicana from other orange juices.

Such attention is becoming increasingly common as interactive technologies enable consumers to rapidly convey opinions to marketers.

“You used to wait to go to the water cooler or a cocktail party to talk over something,” said Richard Laermer, chief executive at RLM Public Relations in New York.

“Now, every minute is a cocktail party,” he added. “You write an e-mail and in an hour, you’ve got a fan base agreeing with you.”

That ability to share brickbats or bouquets with other consumers is important because it facilitates the formation of ad hoc groups, more likely to be listened to than individuals.

“There will always be people complaining, and always be people complaining about the complainers,” said Peter Shankman, a public relations executive who specializes in social media. “But this makes it easier to put us together.”

It was not the volume of the outcries that led to the corporate change of heart, Mr. Campbell said, because “it was a fraction of a percent of the people who buy the product.”

Rather, the criticism is being heeded because it came, Mr. Campbell said in a telephone interview on Friday, from some of “our most loyal consumers.”

“We underestimated the deep emotional bond” they had with the original packaging, he added. “Those consumers are very important to us, so we responded.”

Among those who underestimated that bond was Mr. Campbell himself. In an interview last month to discuss the new packaging, he said, “The straw and orange have been there for a long time, but people have not necessarily had a huge connection to them.”

Reminded of that on Friday, Mr. Campbell said: “What we didn’t get was the passion this very loyal small group of consumers have. That wasn’t something that came out in the research.”

Tropicana plans to contact “everyone who called or wrote us” to express opinions, Mr. Campbell said, “and explain to them we’re making the change.”

Good, I'm glad they are going back. And it's interesting to know others felt like I did about it. I just so happened to discuss this same thing, when my husband brought home this new package design a little while back. I didn't like, and he agreed. I guess others agreed and actually spoke up! It reminded me of a prescription/vitamin container. Strange, but that's what comes to mind when I look at it.

I know this is trivial....interesting enough though, to those who noticed the change though!

One thing which isn't mentioned is the actual Tropic Ana - the tropical girl whose name is Ana which was the logo (hence the name or vice versa). New management came in and they slowly shrunk the logo, then put her on the back of the carton and then retired her. It is time to bring her back!

I didn't like the new orange juice style. But never thought of complaining or anyone would complain. Some people simply don't have what to do with theirselves even this news site which I enjoy reading a lot the only time I get to read it is in the john on my blackberry. I think these bored people that have time to complain over the packaging of an orange juice bottle when the contents are the same are ridiculouly bored and should donate some of their lifetime to people that need it

I totally agree. I cannot stand the Oiz Vehodor. Too many footnotes to keep track of if you want to see the mesoras hashas or torah ohr rather than simply looking on the side.

On a side note regarding this orange juice controversy, it's nice to see the change back wasn't motivated AT ALL by money...it was merely to satisfy these very few loyal consumers....

Yeah sure...

Why do corporations always feel the need to break something that's not broken? Coke and Pepsi are changing their packaging every Monday & Thursday. And then you have products like "Clabber Girl" (baking powder) which have not changed their packaging in 100 years.

Said Mr. Campbell: "What we didnt get was the passion this very loyal small group of consumers have."
"Small group"? Mr. Campbell, as a top business executive, you should know better. I'm sure the amount of "feedback" your company received regarding this ridiculous change was not a small amount. And that amount was only a small fraction of the real total amount of people who fealt the same way (myself included).
Or maybe, you do know that it was a significant amount, but you are calling it a "small group" just to cover your butt.
Personally, I buy whatever brand is on sale (store brands included).

The container is so dumb. I hope whoever did the research is fired! The person probobly didn't do anything and simply stole money from Tropicana. With all the fraud that we see, is this not the most likely situation?? Who in their right mind would ever think that the container would be accepted?? Tropicana costs a fortune and like all other brand names we want it to be obvious that we spent it!! So in conclusion, I think an investigation needs to take place to see if the researchers actually did their jobs!

The new packaging is confusing...it takes minutes to locate the type of orange juice you want, instead of seconds. The caps used to be color coded, as well, to help in locating the product. The first week the unveiled it....all the Tropicana organge juices were LEFT on the shelves and all the others were gone. I was struggling to find the "low acid" and a stock boy told me everyone is confused and giving up and buying a competing product 'cause they can't locate their brand. Weeks later, I am still sitting there trying to find the "low acid" somewhere, anywhere on the label. It's not getting any easier to recognize after weeks. Just very poor product labeling and very poor consumer research and it's clearly made their sales go down because they are changing it back. I wrote them week 1 on their web site telling them I hated the new packaging and found it difficult. I also wrote Gatorade because of it's new stupid "G" labeling. (Hey! I'm a Florida Gator!!)

I want to believe I am just imagining it, but does anyone think the Tropicana in the new packaging tastes more watered down?

When New Coke was brought out, Coca Cola used it as a mask to make an ingredient change – sugar to corn syrup.

This could be the same thing. It could also be a publicity stunt to generate more revenue.

Personally I think they switched to a less colorful packaging and more watered down mixture to reduce costs, but are only bringing back the old packaging.

Keep the half orange knob – I like it.
