A 13-year old teenager identified as an Israeli citizen sustained a cut to his left hand. He was given first aid at the scene. Another male Israeli national sustained a minor injury to his thigh, but he refused medical assistance. The two Israelis were among tens of thousands of other pilgrims currently on an annual pilgrimage Uman during the Jewish New Year to pray at Rebbe Nachman of Breslov’s grave.

The police said the explosion of an unidentified object damaged a garage roof. Photographs of the scene apparently show a number marks from the blast on the wall near where the object exploded. The police said they have opened a criminal case under the article on hooliganism in the Criminal Code.

Later in the day, Vyacheslav Abroskin, the first deputy chief of Ukraine’s National Police confirmed that the Israeli teenager suffered a minor injury, and his life was not in danger.

He also said that five police teams supported by detectives from Kyiv were investigating the case. Moreover, 17 police officers from Israel are closely cooperating with Ukrainian law enforcers in Uman.

The police have not described the incident as a terrorist attack yet, the official said.

“I don’t see anything that would destabilize the situation. The people who are staying there are not worried. We will be trying hard to substantiate all the facts as soon as we can,” the police chief said, adding that fragments of the exploded object had been sent for forensic examination.

Around 500 Ukrainian and Israeli police officers are providing security for the Jewish pilgrims in Uman.

Israeli news site Yediot Ahronoth reported, that police believe its perpetrators were likely criminals who grew tired of the noise the Hasidim make.
