Palo Alto, CA - Authorities have blocked off the 3900 block of Fabian Way in Palo Alto following the discovery of a suspicious box with a threatening note attached.

Between 100 and 200 people have been evacuated or instructed to shelter in place, including 60 students at Kehillah, a private Jewish high school, according to Palo Alto police Agent Dan Ryan.

A security guard from a nearby building discovered the roughly 1-square-foot device on the ground near a bus stop, Ryan said. Police closed down the street and called in the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad.

Ryan described the note attached to the box as "hostile." It also mentioned "pigs," possibly in reference to police, he added.

Authorities used a robot to move the box, which was wrapped in duct tape with a pipe sticking out of one end,  into the middle of the street. They failed to open the package with a small explosive charge but succeeded with a larger one later

Police are still investigating the contents of the device and had not allowed anyone to return to the area.
