Terra Bella, CA – Federal food safety officials are warning consumers to stop eating all foods containing pistachios while they figure out the source of a possible salmonella contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration said that central California-based Setton Farms is voluntarily recalling more than 1 million pounds of nuts.
No illnesses have been reported, but the plant has been shut down voluntarily since late last week.
California health officials say that because Setton Farms shipped nuts to 36 wholesalers across the country, it will take weeks to figure out how many products could be affected.
Setton Farms, based in Terra Bella, a rural hamlet in Tulare County, did not immediately respond to calls for comment. It is the nation’s second-largest pistachio processor.
here we go again all of these companies will go out of business like the peonut butter. what a shame!
just found some in my Pesach pantry! am returning to store ASAP!
Interesting that this comes immediately after the USA strong-armed Israel into giving trade preferences to American pistachios.
And I thought I’d be ahead of the pack by buying my Pesach foods early! I’ll now have to return my Dark Chocolate Pistachios and Premium California Roasted/Salted Pistachios.
While we are on the subject of nuts, do you guys eat peanuts on Pesach(i know peanuts are really a legume and not a nut, but most people consider them as nuts).
Some Ashkenazim consider peanuts to be kitnious, however I found this
” With reference to peanut oil, I wish to reprint the responsum of Hagaon Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, Shlita:
Translation:
“Concerning peanuts, which were called stashkes in Europe—they have been accepted as being permitted on Pesach and are not considered kitniyos (legumes that are forbidden on Pesach) because all the reasons for the prohibition of kitniyos do not apply to peanuts. Peanuts are not sown in fields (with grain), and even if they were there is no fear that grain would be mixed together with the peanuts; bread is not baked from peanuts; and generally speaking though they are vegetables they have the appearance of nuts rather than kitniyos. And even though I have heard that in some places they were considered kitniyos, peanuts should not be forbidden in places where it is not known for certain what the custom had been in their city, because, with reference to kitniyos, when in doubt one should be lenient.
Therefore you may give certification for peanuts and the oil derived from them, and they will be permissible to the majority of persons. Those who know for certain that the custom of their city was not to eat peanuts on Passover should not eat them; others are permitted to eat them.”

There are other issues including those about Judaism in general and about kashrut that we should be discussing. It would be nice if this website would allow people to suggest topics and articles to be discussed.
Many of their products have hashgacha as confirmed by the Setton Farms website. Yiddin should stop eating all nuts until this issue is resolved
Oh no raboisay!!!
R Moshe’s teshuvah is well-known, but I don’t find it persuasive. Peanuts are a legume like any other legume – they grow in a pod. The reason mustard is kitniyos is because it grows in a pod, so why should peanuts be different? As for the argument that it wasn’t known when the issur on kitniyos was accepted, nor was maize, and yet the achronim all accept that it’s included.
BTW, I’d like anyone to demonstrate a sensible difference between quinoa and buckwheat. The main reason for the issur on kitniyos is that they’re cooked as a kasha just like grains – and that fits quinoa exactly.
Nuts are proven to be healthy for your body, there’s no reason to boycott nuts. There are so may different pistachio companies out there.
please watch out, it is all over our heimishe grocereis.
“We can eat quinoa all year long, and peanuts too, as long as we have no allergies. So Pesach is a tradition, and a strong one! Why mess with it?”
That is easy to say if you are not a vegetarian. For vegetarians, and especially for vegans, finding what to eat on Pesach is very hard. Being able to eat peanuts makes things much easier.
Peanuts are, if you read carefully, Safek Kitniyos.
That makes peanut oil a Sfake Sfaykah.
A person from Brooklyn calls it a Fake Sfayka.
The Setton family are Syrian Jews who provide a quality product with good hashgacha at a good price. I hope they do not suffer unduly because of this.
i bought a package yesterday at paperiffic. its labelled kleins. anyone know if that should be returned?
Me thinks Israel should reconsider getting its pistachios from Iran – at least they are safe to eat!

Nuts are healthy for those who don’t have a weight problem. Nuts have plenty of calories, so those who are overweight should avoid them. Compared to other nuts and seeds, pistachios don’t have as much important vitamins and minerals. Raw sunflower seeds are probably the highest overall in nutrients(they are kitniyos though, so not good for Pesach) and are the lowest priced. If you shop carefully you can find unshelled sunflower seeds for $2 a pound or less, which is often cheaper than unshelled peanuts. Sunflower seeds are also a more complete protein source than peanuts. Below is the address to a website that lists the nutritional values of foods. Most people in the US are deficient in magnesium. Raw sunflower seeds have around triple the magnesium of pistacios.
