Queens, NY - A Stop & Shop Supermarket in Forest Hills is giving over a thousand pounds of kosher food to the Queens Jewish Community Council Kosher Food Pantry.

Workers at the Queens JCC say the pantry shelves were completely bare before the donation. They're now stocked with traditional holiday foods like matzo, gefilte fish and macaroons.

"With the way the economy is right now and with so many families and people who have lost their jobs, it was actually a great feeling to give them food to help them to provide for their families for the holiday," said Stop & Shop Store Manager Carletta Cantres.

"Now, we have people coming in who are middle-aged and even a lot of families with children. And those are the people who used to be employed, are not employed," said Warren Hecht, Queens JCC Kosher Food Pantry.

Some estimates show about one in five Jewish families in the city live in poverty.
