With his poll numbers still plummeting, Paterson has been popping out an array of proposals in the past couple weeks to win back political friends who could help his election chances next year.
Today, it was environmental activists.
"Bottled water, while the water may be pure, is no friend of the environmental community," Paterson told a group of environmentalists near the Capitol.
"Its manufacture, its transport, its storage, its chilling, everything that has to do with it is environmentally unfriendly," the Democrat added.

How about cutting the budget. Why in the world do we taxpayers need to supply them with bottled water they want let them buy on their own if I want bottled water I pay for it. There is so many stuff here and there that can be cut out of taxpayers the budget can be half the amount it is now

Bottled water is a huge scam anyway so whatever you think of the "green" issues, it will save the state money. If they cannot make public drinking water safe, they should just buy some cheap Italian wine (or is that yayin nesech)

Exactly. I don't give a damn about the environment, but bottled water is a waste of money. I only buy it if I'm out; in that case I'm paying for the fact that the vendor has shlepped it there for me, and refrigerated it for me, and kept it cold until I wanted it. At home I just put tap water through a Brita filter.

what do we care honestly if the state or city gvt decides its a good way to save money by stopping all purchasing of expensive botteled waters? especially when we have the best tap water in the world? they are talking about all the gvt offices, all the meetings etc. its a great idea both for the state AND the city level which both councilman's simcha felder and eric gioia have proposed

Not being wasteful is a Jewish virtue. Environmentalism is not. Bal Tashchis means don't use a more valuable resource when a cheaper one is available and just as good. When plastic is cheap, and you use more expensive glass or paper because you're concerned about the environment, THAT is bal tashchis.

and you are wrong sir. Baal tashchis be unnecessary waste. every single plastic bottle thats not recyceled goes to a landfill to pollute the earth for the 300 yerars it takes to disintegrate.

Envrionmental consciousness is a very jewish virtue. just because it became heavily politicized by the radical right in the last few years does not make it any less so, just because it became so partisan and political.

You are off your rocker. First you tell me I am wrong. Then you agree with me that bal tashchis means waste; using glass when plastic would be cheaper is a waste of money. Then you start prattling about landfills and "polluting the earth for 300 years", as if that had something to do with bal tashchis. Make up your mind.
Bottom line: bal tashchis has nothing to do with the environment or recycling or landfills. ALL it means is that you do not use a more expensive thing when it would just as convenient to use a cheaper one. In other words, don't waste yiddishe gelt. Spend all the money you need to spend to get what you want, but not more than that. And if you have some other definition of bal tashchis, you will please cite sources or shut up.

you are a moron. this has nothing to do with what is stockpiled for emergency situations. this has to do with fancy botteled water at gvt meetings.

glass is more esily re-used than plastic. true we have made strides to rexcycle plastic, but it is not the same as reusing glass to make new bottles, or crushed glass in street pavement, etc...

Avodah Zarah is the worship of Idolatry. you obviously know very little about Judaism.
Not polluting the earth, conserving energy, and caring about Hashem's briah is part of a true torah lifestyle.

That is AVODAH ZARAH. It is the worship of nature and the earth. It has nothing to do with Torah or Judaism. And I'll bet I know more than you about any Jewish OR non-Jewish topic.
Cite any gemara, rishon, or acharon, for "not polluting the earth" (which according to you seems to mean not using landfills) or for conserving energy.
There is plenty of room for landfills, and no reason not to use them. And energy is just like every other resource - it exists to be exploited, to be used for man's benefit. That means it should be used in the way that is cheapest and most useful.

That's irrelevant. The only question is which costs more. If plastic costs less, then it's bal tashchis to use glass.

Nature-worship is what environmentalism amounts to. It is at root a pagan movement, and completely not a Jewish value. The Torah says we are to "fill up the earth and conquer it", and exploit it to its fullest. "He did not create it to be wilderness, He formed it to be settled." We do not exist for the earth, the earth exists for us. Every decision on resource use must be made with only one criterion in mind: what will produce the most utility for humans. And the best measure we have of how much utility something has, is money. The higher the price something fetches in a free market, the more useful it is to people. Thus, every bit of the earth must be put to its most economically efficient use. That is anathema to environmentalists, because they are PAGANS.

Who ever said that taking care of one's surroundings, (mechabed es a habriyos) taking care of oneself (unishmartem meod es nafshoseichem) and adhereing to waste (baal tashcis) is "nature worship" ??? WHO is worshipping nature? seriously. no one who cares about recycling, not polluting, and saving energy is worshiping nature. they are still god fearing, loyal jews who actually care. You are twisting things based onyour own petty and pathetic interpretation. Hashem also did not form the earth to be destroyed by man. He did not make the earth so that we can make it completely unlivable. Why do so many jewish children these days suddenly have such rampant Asthma problems? Allergies? Cancers? Families have such financial burdens? Theres alot we can do to save money, save waste, and protect our health. thats not idol worship , that is common sense and its all deeply rooted in a torah true observance of judaism. Exploit the earth? Sure, enjoy it. destroy it in the process? The briyah? heck no. thats blasphemous. THAT is pagan. Baal tashcis isnt soley about money, it is also wasting something for nothing.

It looks like you're simply ignorant of facts. The earth is not being destroyed, it's getting better all the time.
Nobody knows what causes asthma, or why it's increased over the past few decades, but it's unlikely to have anything to do with air pollution, because the air is cleaner than it's been for at least 100 years, while asthma has increased. The current most likely theory is that it has to do with kids spending too much time in clean indoor environments, and not playing in the dirt and being exposed to germs. The same thing applies to allergies. The recent practise of not exposing children to peanuts until they're a year old seems to have caused an increase in peanut allergies.
Cancer is NOT increasing. And there's no link between it and air pollution or any other environmentalist scare-du-jour.
I'm all for saving money - that's what I said in the first place. If it saves money it's good. But green nonsense usually COSTS money and WASTES it.
Bal tashchis is about wasting VALUE; and that is measured primarily in money.
