Ramapo, NY – The operators of a yeshiva where a cow was slaughtered in the backyard earlier this week have written a letter apologizing to neighbors for the incident.

Neighbors said this morning that the letter was hand delivered last night to people who live near the school at 609 Route 306, bordering the villages of Pomona and Wesley Hills.
“The unfortunate incident that took place on Monday evening on our school property was totally not within parameters of our school charter or mission purpose,” states the letter signed by Rabbi Gershon Bornfreund, administrator of the Bobover Yeshiva of Monsey. “Ritual animal slaughter is beyond the scope of elementary school education.”
The yeshiva, in a Colonial-style house that town officials maintain is being illegally used as a school, will go before the town’s Zoning Board next week to seek variances to allow the construction of a building on the property to serve 250 students. The 2-acre site also has a nursery school.
Ramapo officials have said the yeshiva began using the existing building as a school illegally.
Rodney Wechsler, who lives next door to the school, said this morning that letter was brought to his home last night by a rabbi from the yeshiva.
The apology, coming days after his wife and 3-year-old son looked out of their kitchen window and saw men with knives slaughtering then decapitating the brown and white spotted cow, was overdue, he said.
“It’s better than nothing,” he said of the letter. “It was obviously written by a lawyer to cover them.”
Its too late for their zoning request. The Board would be out of their minds to approve the new yeshiva after this travesty. I hope the Bobover and all the other yeshivos and shuls in Monsey that operate with a degree of arrogance regarding the community learn from this experience and exercise greater sensitivity to their neighbors.
This is very sad. Because of the absolute insane stupidity of a couple of morons, the yeshiva will never get its permits. This was already an uphill battle to build in a residential area… I can’t imagine they will allow it now. Those morons who thought this was such a good idea should be forced to pay for the yeshiva to move!
“His wife and 3-year-old son looked out of their kitchen window and saw men with knives slaughtering then decapitating the brown and white spotted cow”
Don’t tell me they did that to a brown cow that was also white spotted. And with knives? How many knives are used in shchita? One knife. And how else? You wanted them the slaughter it with a fork?
Folks, get over it. It probably was unthoughtful, but not that horrible. Guess what? All your meat comes from cows that were first slaughtered then decapitated! Gasp!
You know #3 that is a really poor attitude to have. So because you have a “block vote” you believe your community is entitled to completely ignore everyone else? You think that anything is going to be approved after the school beheaded an animal in public view? Not a chance.
Not only does your block vote comment show a complete disregard for your neighbors it also shows a lack of respect for others. It’s not hard to bust up a block vote you know… 2010 is a census year. Learn something about politics please and perhaps you’ll see why your block vote could be rendered a thing of the past quite easily. Then what?
The core issue in places like Monsay, Lakewood, Flatbush, etc. is that we frum yidden have forgotton that we are still in Galus. Yes, it is a “golden” Galus of America but a Galus none the same. It manifests itself in arragance, wearing a Talis in public on Shabbos, disrearding our neighbors, pushing our agendas without thinking of the ramifications, etc.
which Bobov has a school in monsey ?
freedom of religion is a constitutional right for every american i can slaughter animal whereever and whenever i want
Thank you Mr. 11, your’e right on target.
