Secondly, having put swine flu in context, VIN News has been notified of the closure of one yeshivah in Williamsburg due to one—count it, one—single confirmed case of swine flu among its students.

Most importantly, VIN News has learned, several yeshivos and girls schools [one we reported already earlier here] throughout New York are slated to close in coming days due to cases of student swine flu.

VIN news will not be posting notices each time a mosad chinuch closes. We do not want to alarm the community needlessly, as the Yeshivas close mostly of precaution. Rather, we urge parents to simply exercise responsibility: to call their local schools to inquire about closings and re-openings.

Going forward will evaluate if it’s necessary to notify each time a Yeshiva decides to close and will report back to you.

It also needs to be noted, that so far the NYC Dept. of Health has NOT request any of the Yeshivas to close, its all self imposed by school administrators.

Why the panic? Why the secret? It is the way news is presented today. All you need to do is put a notice by each posting that it is nothing to panic about!

are u trying to say that the cheder in williamsburg didnt do the right thing? u think they are only being overcautious. you dont need more than one, only one, case of the swine flu for it to be contagious. please dont undermine the consenquences of the flu. you dont have to cause panic, but the school (which my boys attend) definitely did the right thing.

I think we all understand that there’s no need to panic and that the closings are only a precaution.

It is a great service to quickly inform the parents of closings so that any necessary child care arrangments can be made.

Why are you minimizing it ? Masores BY have a number of confirmed cases – so are other schools – no one asks you anything else but to report the facts – we can make up our minds… also – just report the schools closed for the week – parents need to know as the schools phone lines and hanhalla is overwhelmed…

Finally! A web site with some semblance of seichel!

People are getting wrapped around the axle about sniffles. According to the US CDC, as of now there are 6552 confirmed swine flue cases including 9 deaths IN THE ENTIRE US. Most of the deaths, R”L, were of people with pre-existing conditions which made them more susceptible to succumb.

In any given year, about 35,000 people in the US die, R”L, of the regular flu. When was the last time a “global flu pandemic” of such paranoid proportions was called??? Especially this early in the process?

We need to stop screaming that the sky is falling, step back, and look at the big picture.

And daven, learn Torah, and do chesed – just like we always do.

A major infection control idiocracy I see in numerous Shuls is the cloth peels shared by the whole kehilla. If one person is infected they will all contract the virus. Please ishmartem we nafshoisaichem. USE PAPER TOWELS ONLY.

    Thank you for posting this.

I think your policy is sound.

Unlike some self-proclaimed Yeshivah news site that seeks sensationalism over substance, VIN has once again decided to take the high road and do what is better for the people.

A central list of all mosdos closed due to the flu would be a great idea.

Thanks for keeping a perspective. How can schools which give no time for exercise or support for healthy eating and exercising lifestyles (apparently because Torah learning protects us) be freaking out now? It seems like a philosophical contradition.

Did you consult any medical or halachic authority about your position on this matter. If you didn’t, I would assume your position is wrong, because Yeshivas definitely consulted alot of people before making their decision to close down a place of limud torah for hundreds.

as a therapist working in numerous schools in willi, parents think the school notifies us on school closures and the schools think the parents notify us. none is true if we do not ask the school what is going on we never know because they do not tell us on their own. it would be great if vin would post school closures so we do not have to go running to the schools if they are closed. thank you!

A regular healthy individual with flu symptoms should stay home. Keep your hands clean and cover your mouth when coughing. Parents keep your children and family members out of the emergency rooms. There is nothing that we will do for you unless you are a high risk patient. That means you are either elderly, have other medical conditions, or are very young and ill. Be in touch with your regular doctors as needed.

The only people who should seek immediate attention are those that are having high fever AND difficulty breathing, chest pain when breathing, inability to eat and drink with resultant decrease in urination. The only people being tested for swine flu in the ER’s are those who are to be admitted for isolation purposes or those with severe illness who may need treatment. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority do not fall into either of those categories.

Many people are skeptical about vaccines and for the most part the young and healthy outright refuse them, unless they work in healthcare. The fact that the swine flu has no vaccine should not be concerning to those who don’t vaccinate in the first place for the regular flu.

Use common sense, be clean, avoid other people when sick as much as possible. Most importantly DAVEN.

Hey rabbosai… remember that for halacha reasons it suffices to wash your hands with pouring of cold water over the hands BUT for health reasons you should wash with hot water and soap to kill surface bacteria. And by the way, be generous with using tissues for covering sneezes and other expectorations. just a thought…..

I heard a report from an expert that most infections and bacteria in the hospitals are from nurses that don’t wash their hands with sanitizer from one patient to the next .if the nurses will stick to that rule they would of saved lots of lives

Thank you for not succumbing to the mass hysteria! Everyone needs to take a deep breath and try to think logically rather than emotionally. According to the current numbers, this flu is MILDER than the regular flu. By the numbers, the regular flu would have killed well over a thousand people in the US during the same time period that this has been around. B”H we are still in the single digits. Keep in mind, all of those who died had other medical issues which put them more at risk. I wonder why the Yeshivos are closing their doors now when at any given time during the regular flu season they don’t, the other flu is just as contagious! Furtheremore, By closing the Yeshiva for a few days only prevents the ones that have it now from spreading it, in a week there will be others, are they going to shut the school down for the rest of the year? Even further, do u propose that we all daven B’Yichidos this Shavuos? spending countless hours in a crowded shul with poor ventilation is at least as bad if not worse than sitting in a classroom

Yeshiva Tiferes Yisroel announced that they will not have classes for a week.

Prospect Park Yeshiva informed parents, that if your son is in Tiferes do not send your child to school. (This really happened)

Lev Bais Yaacov a sort of sister school to Tiferes Yisroel is not happy with this and they announced that any child with a sibling in Prospect or Yeshiva Derech Hatorah shouldn’t come in.

Stores all over are running low on basic consumer goods.

Yeshiva Derech Hatorah, locks out children with siblings in Tiferes, Lev Bais Yaakov and Chofetz Chaim of Forest Hills.

St. Mary’s declares that any children with siblings in Derech Hatorah should stay home.

Calm down. It’s only the flu. Big deal. Do not believe the 34,000 die of the flu each year. If that were so, you would know many people that died of the flu. I’m sure most people do no know ANYONE that died from the flu. This is one big media lie! Get back to your normal lifestyle and forget about the swine or any other flu.
