New York - Firstly, Vos iz Neias reminds the heimishe public that more people, rachmana litzlan, die of the regular flu each year than of the swine flu.
Secondly, having put swine flu in context, VIN News has been notified of the closure of one yeshivah in Williamsburg due to one—count it, one—single confirmed case of swine flu among its students.
Most importantly, VIN News has learned, several yeshivos and girls schools [one we reported already earlier here] throughout New York are slated to close in coming days due to cases of student swine flu.
VIN news will not be posting notices each time a mosad chinuch closes. We do not want to alarm the community needlessly, as the Yeshivas close mostly of precaution. Rather, we urge parents to simply exercise responsibility: to call their local schools to inquire about closings and re-openings.
Going forward will evaluate if it’s necessary to notify each time a Yeshiva decides to close and will report back to you.
It also needs to be noted, that so far the NYC Dept. of Health has NOT request any of the Yeshivas to close, its all self imposed by school administrators.

I think we all understand that there's no need to panic and that the closings are only a precaution.
It is a great service to quickly inform the parents of closings so that any necessary child care arrangments can be made.

are u trying to say that the cheder in williamsburg didnt do the right thing? u think they are only being overcautious. you dont need more than one, only one, case of the swine flu for it to be contagious. please dont undermine the consenquences of the flu. you dont have to cause panic, but the school (which my boys attend) definitely did the right thing.

Why are you minimizing it ? Masores BY have a number of confirmed cases - so are other schools - no one asks you anything else but to report the facts - we can make up our minds... also - just report the schools closed for the week - parents need to know as the schools phone lines and hanhalla is overwhelmed...

Finally! A web site with some semblance of seichel!
People are getting wrapped around the axle about sniffles. According to the US CDC, as of now there are 6552 confirmed swine flue cases including 9 deaths IN THE ENTIRE US. Most of the deaths, R"L, were of people with pre-existing conditions which made them more susceptible to succumb.
In any given year, about 35,000 people in the US die, R"L, of the regular flu. When was the last time a "global flu pandemic" of such paranoid proportions was called??? Especially this early in the process?
We need to stop screaming that the sky is falling, step back, and look at the big picture.
And daven, learn Torah, and do chesed - just like we always do.

The seichel is that with regular flu there is a vaccine and there is myriads of treatments. Admittedly, the US was not prepared for swine flu or H1N1; there is no vaccine; tamaflu and other drugs were not available in great quantities. The global flu pandemic for Asian flu or for other flus is just not as widely reported. They have been done, especially when the strains change. It is not about the sky is falling but about controlling the virus and its spread. This is not early in the process, you don't wait for millions to be infected before calling an emergency. It is proper to take precautions.

I take care of a mikvah in BP and did extensive research about bactaria/fungus in pools/spa's, the most important place to watch and care for against bactaria is "NOT" the water, it is the floors (and mats on the floor) shower stalls and benches were the funges breeds and thus have to be sanitised. The influenza vaccine regularly administered prior to the flu season is made up of dead flu virus germs. The flu vaccine is prepared based on the projection of which strain of flu will be appearing in our region. The CDC website has this basic information.

Are you meshuge...I hope you are joking. With all the wet surfaces and difficulty of cleaning, a mikveh is the very last place you would want to go until after this whole flu issues goes away. Going to mikvah is voluntary and not such a big deal and given the relative risks, stay away from the mikvah. Going to the mikveh is voluntary for a man. It was a male that asked the question. It is not voluntary for a women to go to the mikveh. A Rav should be consulted if you have questions about the sanitary conditions in a mikveh for women. If you bring your own towel and wear your own slippers you may not have a big issue. As far as the surfaces of the mikveh are concerned, a container of Lysol wipes will help kill most bacteria and viral germs.

May 24, 2009 at 09:30 PM ERMD Says:Report as Inappropriate
A regular healthy individual with flu symptoms should stay home. Keep your hands clean and cover your mouth when coughing. Parents keep your children and family members out of the emergency rooms. There is nothing that we will do for you unless you are a high risk patient. That means you are either elderly, have other medical conditions, or are very young and ill. Be in touch with your regular doctors as needed.
The only people who should seek immediate attention are those that are having high fever AND difficulty breathing, chest pain when breathing, inability to eat and drink with resultant decrease in urination. The only people being tested for swine flu in the ER's are those who are to be admitted for isolation purposes or those with severe illness who may need treatment. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority do not fall into either of those categories.
Many people are skeptical about vaccines and for the most part the young and healthy outright refuse them, unless they work in healthcare. The fact that the swine flu has no vaccine should not be concerning to those who don't vaccinate in the first place for the regular flu.
Use common sense, be clean, avoid other people when sick as much as possible. Most importantly DAVEN.

By the numbers, the regular flu would have killed well over a thousand people in the US during the same time period that this has been around. B"H we are still in the single digits. Keep in mind, all of those who died had other medical issues which put them more at risk.
